Being a whiny emo beta-male was a thing when SEED was being developed, so we shouldn't hold early Kira's self-pity against him too much. Guy also put down the BuCues and some other ZAFT enemies in a very Amuro-like fashion. Something about the desert always mans up Gundam protags. Then it does turn to shit more-or-less with Kira having enough of an edge to choose not to kill.
