My favourite is the original white/purple tint Devilman. It makes him look more demon-like. I really dislike the fleshtone one, but the aquamarine design fits the toku/superhero style of the original cartoon.

I think the live action Gatchaman, Tomorrow's Joe and Tiger Mask adaptations were more offensive I guess the Devilman movie is just a meme at this point.

>Tomorrow's Joe and Tiger Mask

We got spared from an English language DVD release of those, though.
>>
Let's be real. It's not the worst movie, but it's one of the worst adaptations out there. There have been worst Go Nagai live action like the low budget Kekkou Kamen movies but the difference is that they weren't Devilman. Japanese fans had big expectations from Devilman but left the cinema feeling more than just disappointment.
>>
>>15437489
Yeah because they literally disappeared after they hit theaters which is always a sign that they weren't good. Those Kenshin movies however got a huge standing ovation at Cannes and were heavily pushed around because they were that good.
>>
>>15437528
Well with the exception of those shitty live action Attack on Titan movies which even Japs hated but given its namesake it was always going to be pushed around but really the international circuit do not care about live action Japanese films unless they're actually good which they rarely are nowadays.
>>
>>15437497

Considering how we still have not gotten a faithful adaptation of it and how we're still getting low budget shit I call bullshit. If Devilman was a prestige as you're saying it should be treated much better than it actually is.

Exactly. It was a terrible fim, but it's considered a lot worst, because it's Devilman and people had expectations.

Dragonball Evolution didn't do well either, and even Devilman is considered the worst adaptation of the two by Japanese fans.

I'm not gonna argue whether one is more prestigious than the other or which one has more cultural impact, because it's a subjective thing.

But I will say that sales don't and shouldn't indicate prestige. Otherwise, Naruto of all fucking things would be considered more prestigious since it has sold more than three times the copies that Tomorrow's Joe and Devilman have sold put together.
>>
>>15446841
Nice backpedal.

>But I will say that sales don't and shouldn't indicate prestige. Otherwise, Naruto of all fucking things would be considered more prestigious since it has sold more than three times the copies that Tomorrow's Joe and Devilman have sold out together
Except sales do. Naruto has a bigger presence, and gets treated much better by the giant industry corporations. The original point was that Devilman isn't a prestigious franchise, which is why it had a crappy movie, but as I have shown, it was the more expensive movie of its time. Cultural impact is determined by the franchise popularity. It's the only objective way to measure it.

Again, you're wrong, and you should just stop embarrassing yourself after shitting so many fake atatements.

Because they supposedly had high expectations for a Devilman live action. As for why it went wrong, well, to begin with, it's not exactly easy to adapt for a single live action film without making major alterations.

A straight up 1-1 adaptation would be impossible especially with the amount of money it would cost to pull off successfully. That, and the Japanese are incompetent when it comes to these things. It never would have worked out right.

So while I think we all agree the movie was terrible, here's a question: could a good Devilman movie be made, and if so, how? Would you want a multi-part franchise to tell the whole story, or a single, stand-alone film that didn't have the same scope, but focused instead on a single arc?

There was a scene from the trailers before the movie came out where they had CG Devilman start to charge up, and it flickers into an actual sketch-type look, like stylized from the manga, that was really cool. I don't think that ever made it into the final film for whatever reason. Just another disappointment, I suppose.
>>

Funnily enough the CGI is the only thing people say was good about the movie

The CGI was pretty cool for a Japanese movie in 2004.

The acting is atrocious though. This is pretty much the worst Jinmen scene you could do. You can't sense an ounce of emotion from actors.

Cyborg 009 vs Devilman's adaptation of the Jinmen scene on the other hand is near perfect.

>How would you adapt Devilman for live action?
Motion captured rotoscoped full cgi
does that count as live action?
