People remember DYRL not the original SDF and for good reason. The animation quality was atrocious, there are like less than 5 episodes whose quality can even be called decent. The rest is make by botton of barrel corean monkeys. And because of this the series suffers a great lot. Then lets add the brain dead characters the lovely trio, Minmay a bubbling idiot, Misa a forever frigid woman and mediocre pilot Ichijo who is denser than iron and can't fucking decide between the two gals until the last 5 seconds of the last fucking episode.

The only redeemable thing of SDF is the setting and the mecha designs (and 2 nonbrainede characters Fokker and Claudia Lasalle). But everything else of note is forgettable.

Subsequent series are much much better than the original.

Because you were wrong about everything but the animation ( and only half the time, allot of the time it is quite good). The writing is extremely good, they develop the main them at the perfect pace and the plot is really engaging.
Also, the Itano Circus is amazing.
