The subarms don't do anything except swap weapons or pass ammunition.

With an apparatus, what else? If there is a control mechanism in the cockpit, I see no reason why they'd need supesu magic or >2 limbs to use it.

IIRC they only did stuff like grab, slash and pass weapons (?), nothing a well-programmed series of macros couldn't do.
