Why don't more ships have bits/funnel weapons again? It makes sense when facing little robots that could fly everywhere around it, especially the hangar. I only remember Dewey's ship from the end of Eureka 7.

The Harlock creator tried to steal Yamato for himself because he worked as art director for it. But now fortunately it was decided by the Japanese law system that he has no rights over it.

Harlock was originally supposed to show up in the original run of Yamato but it was cut short before he could show up. He does show up in the manga though.

Leiji is basicaly known as the creator of the Yamato series. He even has a manga where a space battleship Yamato shows up 10 years prior to the TV series and Nishizaki hired him after reading his Sexaroid manga. After that he was given virtually complete control over the work and reworked the entire original concept along with doing all the designs.

The Yamato also shows up in the second Galaxy Express manga and many of his other works from the 90's. Its latest appearance in the Harlock universe is in the new Harlock manga being published in English in October.

I heard a lecture once say that in future space warfare, a ship might employ a system similar to shield bits or sub-arms in order to protect itself from attacks. Anyways, a ship using funnels is essentially deploying drones, which is exactly what a boss in Armored Core is able to do

As a tradition(and the fact that its fucking cool), they transform so they can punch enemy ships because the Macross did it.
