Assuming unlimited funds/as advanced of technology as we want, a cockpit with a neural interface connected to a giant blob of nanomachines. Need a plane? You got one. Need wheels? You got them. Fighting godzilla? Mech. Etc. The catch is that it would need a source of ammo, or at least a source of material if the nanomachines are self-replicating
Or in a pinch, just make a harpoon gun.

I'm of the opinion that transformation generally suck. Layzner Mk.2 is a perfect example of a design that compromises some of the best elements of the original to fit in a shitty plane mode on a robot that can already fly. I hate how it drops the eyes beneath the clear visor just so they don't show up on the plane. Most of the 80s plane robots are dragged down by the gimmick to sell toys.

I find that if a plane mode must be included then it works better if the plane is designed as the primary mode and then the robot form is made to fit. I think that's one of the reasons the VFs aged better than say, L-Gaim Mk.2 or Billbine. Pic is probably my favorite plane robot.

I think a major problem with Transformable mechs is trying to make them work IRL, and the gimmicky toys of course. Transformers can let any bot be whatever vehicle mode there is. Since they're sentient there's no need to make room for an engine, a fuel tank etc. since the bot themselves are that as well.

Mechs like Zeta, the VF's etc. has to take into account powerplant location, cockpit etc. everything gotta transform and that no part gets in the way of another. I like transforming mechs but it bothers me that Gundam goes the lazy way like the Scramble Gundam. Kawamori's VFs does a good job of compromising and the Layzner MK.II works so well having the cockpit on the head, it makes the jet mode effective.

That's pretty different. I don't like how transformations limit the base design so often. Getter just doesn't give a shit about having the transformation make sense so it neither impedes or enhances the design.

There was an idea I was writing which would be Sentai/Ranger based and wanted to design on RPG Maker.
Mecha wise for the team, the colors would be Red Komodo, White Mistress, Blue Lynx, Yellow Bull and Pink Darter. Red, Blue and Yellow would pilot the main mecha while Pink and White would support them in an aircraft. Both of those can combine, but it would be a once in a while occasion.
Was thinking of doing the main mecha Getter Robo style with 3 different forms. It would keep 1 form when fully combined though
