So, it sounds like there were two competing visions with this show, but Nagai mostly won out due to him actually being the director. I think that his ending of killing them all off obviously would've worked better for the direction he led the series in, but it looks like he let Okada do the ending and we got that instead. This says all we already know, and if you listened to it a lot of it was him being very intentionally vague and restrained with his wordings even if he was obviously angry at the writing and treatment because he doesn't want to come off as too unprofessional. The only thing we get is he was told something very different would happen to McGillis in the beginning, and he talked about how he disagreed with the writing decisions and that so did most of the Tekkadan seiyuus. They actually did not even know about how bad it would get until the last 5 episodes were being recorded, they were not prepared for anything, which is probably why Orga's seiyuu was going on and on about how he'd pilot the shiden.

Look, would that really be so bad? Did anyone really like Kudelia as a character? At her best, she was your typical peace princess, made less cloying by the fact she didn't do much and didn't get in people's way.

Tekkadan is a group of child soldiers who fell under the sway of a charismatic madman. Obviously, the story is only going to end one way. You know what happened to the REAL iron-blooded orphans, right? They died in droves!

Orga / Mika do absolutely nothing heroic throughout the entire series, and they end up going up against a force with superior numbers, equipment and lead by an actual strategist. It makes sense that they'd die messily.

In fact, I'd argue that they should have accomplished even LESS. The ending makes it so that their actions made SOME difference, but they really should've accomplished nothing. More, their casualties are absurdly low, given that they were fighting off all of Gjallhorn! Ideally, nearly the entire cast should've died except for the youngest kids who managed to escape and weren't worth pursuing.

Like, don't you want to see something different for a change? I really dislike the peace princess archetype, and it'd have been satisfyingly dramatic to see Kudelia die.

They are hidden long enough until the investigation is over so that nothing turns up and the whole massacre can be written up any way Rustal wishes.
