While Mika is A main character I don't really remember that there's more time devoted to him than Orga or Kudelia in season 1. And in season 2 he's mostly in scenes with the rest of the cast, seldom being the center of attention (unless he shoots somebody).

At the end of the day, his only claim to the MC status is that he rides the Gundam and is pretty good at it.

Initially, I'd agree.
But as the series went on, he just became less and less important. To the point where he's part of a love triangle he isn't even aware of or care about, consciously refuses to make any plot relevant decisions and ultimately decides to go down fighting, because there's no point in carrying on without the rest of Tekkadan.

He also always shares the spotlight with Orga in the official material and they are presented as co-protagonists.

This is literally the opposite.
Narratively the show is mostly driven by the politic and the character's personal motives. Every characters (except for tekkadan) explain or imply what their plan is once and then dont come back on it.
Also a lot of interections and feelings between the characters are just hinted and you can miss them if you dont pay attention.

Maybe, but the big issue is that it had notable mecha animators (many of who having worked on the franchise prior to IBO) turning in less than impressive work than in previous efforts.

It isn't worse than say... 0079 or Wing. But it's a considerable step down from a team who've already had three (or more) Gundam shows under their belt by this point.

I don't have much issue with this.
Mind you, I really don't like IBO however, I understand the plot and themes. The problem is, the themes were EXTREMELY hard to extract out of the series when the writing and characterization is really fucking bad (Don't be greedy, muh KANGZ of Mars, order is better than revolution etc.)
The story itself was good, it's just the execution and the lack of a centralized character absolutely ruins it.
