I find this sub genre fascinating. I loved Escaflowne as a child when it aired on Fox and over the last few years found myself getting more into Dunbine and Wings of Rean, Something like Nagano's Fiver Star Stories seems relevant as well, though I've only seen the OVA.
So Fantasy Mecha general I guess.

thanks

Aren't all giant robots fantasy?
>>15394622
Dunbine is filled with fantasy creatures you just don't see them very much. And yeah, dragons. They look pretty funny in the TV series but are pretty unique looking.
>>15394700
The aesthetic and setting is usually sci fi though. I'm thinking of mecha that look like knights, are ran on magic, set in a fantasy esq setting, etc.
>>15395020
Why don't you just say Medieval mecha?
>>15395047
Because fantasy stuff often veers away from being properly medieval and often adds in other elements, Escaflowne for example has allot of clearly renaissance inspired elements. You could also potentially have fantasy mecha that resembles hoplites more than knights, and has more of a empire of late antiquity type world as opposed to a medieval feudal setting, so it would be too limited to just call what I am interested in medieval mecha.
>>15395581
So it's pre-modern mecha?
>>15395662
In aesthetic yes. No reason not to include Sci-Fi worlds with space travel which could also fit in with the general vibe.
Recently I watched Genmu Senki Leda, I'm having a hard time finding good images of the mecha, but the designs were pretty interesting and original.

The Escaflowne Movie. Never understood why people hated it. Probably just original series nostalgia, which I wasn't blinded from when seeing the movie.
The characters are just so much more likeable. They had less development due to the short run-time, but that also meant less drawn-out angst and whiny melodrama.
Watching the series later I could appreciate some of the unique story elements and the great soundtrack, but it too-often felt like I was watching some Inuyasha drama filler.
>What are you watching right now ?
Not watching, but playing Frame Gride. Very underrated fantasy mecha by the Armored Core devs.
>>15394492
Magic Knight Rayearth, though it takes a few episodes for them to actually get the mechs.
>>15394492
Boldor is pretty cool, if the epitomy of obscure
>>15396640
White Knight is from White Knight Chronicles (of course), as is Dragon Knight.
>>15396653
Izubuchi is the only mecha designer that can compare to Nagano
>>15398457
They're apples and oranges. Buchi is about muscles while Nagano is about layers.
IT'S KUGAI TIME
Honorable mention to Samurai 7's designs?

Having read the manga and (tried) to read the light novel from which it was adapted, it's not that great. It's not horrible, but after a pretty fun first arc, it proceeds to turn into your usual bland "let's try to improve the world" except "the world" is "giant robots".
>>15400852
>>15399887
I like the design, but I hate how it made it impossible for there to be an actual action figure of it that transforms
>>15402749
>>15396667
I don't see the comparison, Escaflowne the series is a well done saga with character arcs, fun stuff along the way, etc. The movie is your usual no substance quick movie adaptation.

I never watched much of Dunbine. Do they ever show how much of an Aura Battler is mechanical and how much is really made out of insect parts?
>tfw dunbine does a run-in on that American/Japan robot fight and kicks their ass
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dftWoHldXs
>>15403235
I don't know how much of it was shown, but there was some dialogue here and there about that. All I remember is
>the muscles are made of some plant vines
>insect parts are mostly exterior, armor, wings, fingers, there was an episode later in the series in which the mc party hunts local wildlife for spare parts
>the micro(?)processors were handmade, but how and from what?
>cameras and screens were straight up magic, idk
Can anyone clarify?
I think fantasy mechs are cool as fuck, but I don't think any of the shows or manga have been especially well done.

People seem rather fond of Wataru on here, despite the reliance on a MOTW formula.

Anyone here like Broken Blade? I just started it and shit's pretty cash. It has quite the feudal feel to it.
