Was IBO's ending just a bad rehash of 00 S1's ending?

no since 00 has a s2. IBO just ends with the main cast dying pretty much wasting our time.

s2 should have been all about Macky and his fight instead of the tekkadans.

In Gundam 00, you actually want the underdogs (Graham, Russian duo, Mr luck) to win, and they're likeable as fuck.

IBO and 00 were both good series that I enjoyed. But I wouldn't want to re-watch them, and I definitely think a lot of their content could've been cut/streamlined. I'm not going to pretend like one series is better than the other for some retarded reason (like MS design or some quirky characters).

00's movie really helped wrap up the show in a (relatively) consistent package. By evolving the conflict and upping the stakes tenfold, the show's core themes were able to flourish more.

IBO needs a better wrap-up. The idea behind the ending is totally solid, but completely lacking in execution. The exposition drop that was the second half of the final episode was just shitty. The show deserves more. I can only imagine what a movie-length finale could have accomplished.

Anyway, 00 is closer to Star Trek than it is to IBO. They're both pretty different stories when you get down to it.

I don't think there is a single more entertaining minor Gundam character. he has his own self-contained story arc, he goes from hotshot, to traumatized survivor, to being utterly resented by his peers, to champion who gets the girl.

I think Setsuna made his feelings on the matter perfectly clear to Marina during their first meeting:

He remembers it was Azadistan that destroyed his homeland Krugis during the Solar Wars, but he's pragmatic enough to realize that the outcome was inevitable given the circumstances of the war, and that holding a petty grudge over something like that (like many of the Conservatives in her country) would ultimately not help CB's goal of eradicating conflict.

00 characters were perfectly flat, without a flaw like a nightmarish fanfiction. And the whole story didn't bring more sense than the IBO's one. It's fucking Gundam, there's not a single layer of deepness here.

00s1's ending was a turning point for it's protagonists. They no longer had this massive tech advantage, their enemies were unified against them, and they lost some of their friends. It was a low point for them to rise up from in the following season, coming back more mature and refined after learning from their defeat. It's like the ending of Empire leading into Jedi.

IBO's ending is just the end of the road for them. Tekkadan's flaws and behavior caught up to them, and there is no way to rise from the ashes. They're not going to come back more refined, they're going to see how fucked up things got after taking a few steps back. It's telling that you have members upset Ride is continuing on Tekkadan's ways years later. You could say it was the turning point in their lives, but not in the story.

00 S1 wasn't a bad end. Apart from Reborns working in the shadows to form the not-titans, it would have been fine, and probably even was the plan. A united earth federation, with new technology to boot. You could cut out the scenes alluding to a season 2 and 00 S1 stands on its own as a complete story.
