Pretty much this. The 80's was the height of Japan's economic pull before the bubble burst. The sentai, Kamen Rider, and Metal Heroes of that decade were amazing. Too bad Ultraman only had 1 installments in the early part of the 80's.

Man, what the fuck happened to Japan? When you look at anime in the 70's and 80's as well as toku, the male characters were actually dudes. They weren't the whimpy herbivore nu-males of today. They had more fortitude and less of a metrosexual attitude.

I mean, if you introduced a hero from the 80's into today, the whole culture shock from the protagonist as well as the audience would be jarring. Like Layzner's Eiji Asuka or Jiraiya from the 1988 Metal Hero series.

Late Showa is good as Kamen Rider Black is my favorite Rider series, but early Hisei has some great quality.
