They're both much more formal and showy uniforms suited for parade grounds instead of battlefields. The Japanese one having a different cut or brighter primary color does not make it different in goal or idea. Nor does having red piping instead of gold.

And I'm not talking about style. Of course they look different. If they looked just like the US dress uniform that'd be an entirely different set of complaints and they'd basically be plagiarising. The new dress uniforms are not any different in goal though, being significantly more formal and impractical for a battlefield. Nor are they in any way more "anime" than any other dress uniform. If they were the US Navy's uniform would be guilty of it long before them. Wearing a uniform doesn't give you exclusive knowledge about tailoring or design.

The diagonal red line on the jacket will give the soldiers more if a strong look since it enhances the natural triangular shape of the men. It also looks less bulky than other dress uniforms which makes them look modern and efficient, a reflection of how they want their military viewed.

Yes, let's just not mention the aiguillettes, epaulets, piping on the pants and such that the US dress uniform has (depending on rank). It's muted, therefor it's not ornate or ostentatious at all unlike the Japanese one, where clearly bright colors and some sharp lines make all the difference.
