There's also things that don't make sense to me like McGillis tossing one of his swords to the side mid-fight with the Kimaris.

Tekkadan

Protagonists with a strong sense of nakama. Not afraid to get their hands dirty, doing whatever it take in order to survive. However, they have no real ideals and their goals are vaguely defined with no planned out path. As a result, they take any opportunity they can to move forward which results in them getting in over their head and playing politics they don't understand.

McGillis

A prettyboy protagonist with strong ideals, clearly set goals, and has plans in order to reach them. However, he is willing to stoop to more underhanded measures in the name of his dreams, including sacrificing his namaka. This comes to bite him in the ass as his BFF turned out to be alive and derailed his plans, making McGillis unable to achieve his dream.

I try.

This was really more I've been comparing IBO to run of the mill shonen shows for awhile now, stuff like Naruto or One Piece. At times the show seems like it wants to defy the conventions usually present in those shows while opening them up for the viewer to think about, other times it feels like it just wants to be a grittier version of them.

This little bit of analysis is just something I cobbled together. Tekkadan provides the friendship themes of shonen, but the pursuing their dreams bit is rather weak. I once heard a quote about Ichigo that I felt summed up Tekkadan pretty well.

Sad flashbacks are not a replacement to actually developing and sustaining a character. By the end of Bleach, a lot of characters were very similar to how they were when they were first introduced and some have even gotten far less interesting.

I think it's more they brought out the worst in each other. Tekkadan always wanted to go up in the world despite not having any real plans on how to do so, all McGillis did was promise to put them at the top in exchange for their support in his rebellion. Meanwhile, McGillis looked at Tekkadan and saw the kinds of kids that fought alongside Agnika during the Calamity war (since the implications of AV tech means the original Gundam pilots were all kids). It fueled his desires to take Bael and bring about the world Agnika's actions inspired him to believe in. But he never saw things for what they really were, Bael wasn't enough to defeat Rustal and Tekkadan weren't the OG Gundam pilots fighting to save humanity from the mobile armors. McGillis only saw what he wanted to see.

They ruined each other like a bad celebrity marriage.

Iron blooded orphans was truly a trendsetter in every sense of the word, introducing visceral and intense melee combat that Gundam has not witnessed ever before; you could really feel the grit and weight of the attacks and seeing the characters bloodied and struggling to live tugged at the heartstrings deeply
And the characters, who are so deeply thought provoking and with such masterfully told story arcs, with plenty of development
The presentation of such a gray morality of those who live in the twisted world of the Post-Disaster world - there are no true winners, to gain something the characters must have to give something up as well
There is a sense of realism with the how the characters are portrayed as well, those who hold their ideals up high, Mcgllis, Iok, Carta all crash and burn
Thank you, Nagai and Okada for crafting such a masterpiece - the biggest flaw is that the bar is set so high that I'm afraid future Gundam works will never be able to hold a candle to Iron-Blooded Orphans

Rustal is clearly not a man obsessed with power, namely because he already controls immense power and wields it mostly to maintain order.

We've already picked some of his thoughts and he doesn't believe in individuals determining the course of history, but rather many people over a course of time. And he believes Gjallarhorn's future will be determined by the next generation. He's like an evil Bright. I'm certain he's going to put the fate of the Arianrhod fleet in Gaelio's hands after seeing the conclusion of Gaelio and McGillis's fight. In fact, the fact that McGillis lost is a crushing defeat to the ideology of absolute power, so it wouldn't make sense for Rustal to pursue it right after McGillis was crushed by Gaelio. I'm also certain he's not simply "using" Gaelio and Julietta, rather he wants them to be tested to see what kind of beliefs and people will be taking over Gjallarhorn with the next generation.

Of course, I could be completely mistaking his character, but from the things he's said and done Rustal is a very pragmatic and self-aware person, who understands that individuals are just pieces of a much bigger picture. I don't see him becoming the new dictator of the world, he seems more like the kind to retire and enjoy the benefits he's reaped while in power while leaving the organization to his successors.

I also don't think there's been any indication that Rustal plans on stepping down immediately and Gaelio might believe that Rustal will continue to try and maintain the status quo and stall any significant reform until he retires, which could be years.

It's also possible Rustal's planning on doing something unnecessarily awful next episode to wipe out Tekkadan and that's why he does it.

It's pretty clear that neither Gali nor McGillis activated their super-mode; McGillis, based on his talk with Mika, doesn't know how, and Gaelio would've schooled the shit out of him if he had activated his. Without kicking off the limiter, the benefits of AV-EIN don't really come into play. Also, for what it's worth, McGillis' own improved AV might offer similar benefits without the need to offload the cognitive demands of the AV system onto a third party.

Actually, on the points of McGillis' AV experiments, how does everyone feel about the "special troops" comment made at the end of this episode? Did Rustal forcefully Graze-Ein the captured McGillis loyalists and turn them into monsters? Are they his special troops? I'm curious about how special they could be.

I think the point of AV Ein is that Gaelio's limiter is off ALL the time. Mika overclocking Barbatos has drawbacks, but the Kimaris is constantly in that state.

Kimaris Vidar's actually fine besides the AV Type-E. They can just tack on Bael's arm and send it out with one of Kimaris's other equipment loadouts if Gaelio doesn't mind using it without super mode.

He still has the AV, so he can still use it.

I think that what's going to happen is that Julieta won't beat Mika(because Mika can't lose), but even though he totals the Julia the Barbatos will end up just as fucked and Mika will die having given himself over to the AV completely. He'll say some sad shit about how they have to go to the final place with Orga etc. and then Tekkadan will be over. Julieta will survive, meaning Team Meat wins a flawless victory. Then they'll do a timeskip and Jewdelia or Atra will be narrating some shit about how the whole conflict did raise dissent throughout Gjallarhorn and Tekkadan's spirit lives on or whatever, there will be a "where are they now" thing with Kudelia being a real politician on her own, Atra raising her babby, Ride being a useless fucking faggot, Takaki hanging out with his sister, life goes on, the end.

Oh and Iok will succeed Rustal as commander of the Arianrhod Fleet.

Titans weren't that big and the AEUG deployed a WMD and Axis forces to help them. IIRC side material puts both the AEUG and Titans as few dozens of ships in the final battle, combined. They were both tiny organizations.

Zanscare also had a WMD deployed against it in the form of the Keilas Guile.

A-Laws was larger but every single 00 Gundam is a WMD with trans-AM but especially 00R, so it's not really a fair comparison. CB was never at a disadvantage because they maintained a huge tech advantage the entire time.

So unless Tekkadan pull out a literal WMD or Barbatos goes Trans-AM I don't see them winning.
