IBO is horrible aside from the Gaelio arc.
The ensemble cast was handled horribly.
Most characters are developed through the most ham fisted and cliché plot devices.
The animation is very bad for a split cour gundam, even AGE had top notch animation although it was a straight 49 episode run with a 1 week break.
The OST is alright with a few standout tracks.
The first season wastes a good 12-14 episodes going nowhere.
Most deaths are very predictable or cheesy.
Tries too hard to hold mature themes and tones and executed them poorly.
There is an attempt made to worldbuild an intricate political, social and economic landscape, but this is poorly done throuh blocks of exposition.

I think IBO is a decent series, but it's nowhere near the best Gundam has to offer.

First season has a promising start, an incredibly dull middle, and a passable end. Final episode was pretty gud. The setting was cool but the problem was nothing fucking happened for 70% of it. Also Mika curb stomping people is definitely entertaining in a way but doesn't really make for engaging drama or stakes.

Second season has had its moments and was better than the first, but it has been uneven throughout. Lots of plot threads have been pointless or had unsatisfying conclusions. Character arcs are mostly either nonexistent or nonsensical. The only narrative elements from the show I fully enjoyed from beginning to end were McGillis and Gaelio, and even then a lot of it was just laughing at McGillis.

Production-wise I like the way fights look in motion but the stills are awful. Sound design is top notch though. Everything from gun shots, to weapon impacts, to booster sounds is incredibly satisfying. Even the MA screeching was a fantastic and original kind of noise for me and the music during battles has been great. So while the show looks uneven the sound has been incredible.

Overall the bad outweighs the good. It's not a great show, or even a particularly good one. And I wouldn't recommend it to someone. However I am glad that I watched it and did find things to enjoy about it. I dropped it for a while in S1 during the middle when it was just so boring, but aside from that it has been a fun ride.

I'd say it's the best AU that Gundam has managed to produce yet, considering how terrible every other AU has been.

TL.DR: If IBO fights didn't look like ms paint scenes most of the time and actually properly spread out detailed shots with proper lighting, they be a lot better

My most favorite gundam out of the recent ones like AGE, G-Reco,

One thing I like about IBO is that like UC the Gundams are typically higher performance than the average mobile suit, but they're not outrageously strong. Plenty of other mobile suits can measure up to them in the right hands, and it's the AV system moreso than the mobile suit itself that causes such a disparity between grunts and main characters.

Most AU Gundams are basically 50 times more powerful than the grunt suits, virtually indestructible and able to destroy tens of mobile suits with a pull of the trigger. UC and IBO Gundams are usually like 1.5x better than most grunt suits in terms of performance, and newtype hax or AV push the protagonists to the level they're at.

Child soldiers don't win and the powers that govern world affairs don't fall just because some upstart mercenaries pull a couple fast ones.

IBO is ending the way it ran, surprising me by setting up a cliche Gunota power fantasy rice and then dropping some (drama-seasoned) reality curry on top. It burns my mouth and does things to my gut that leave me a little unsatisfied, but it tastes good all the same.

Hush was the best part of the show He is introduced as a potential new ace pilot who can train under Mika and show that a normal person with enough determination can become like someone he looks up to. Even though everything we know about the science and psychology of why Mika is such a good pilot indicates that it will never be the case, he was encouraged into the position. In the end it amounted to nothing, but he got satisfaction out of giving it a shot, and having tried his best. Instead of being just another manual labor support staff, he got to pilot a mobile suit. He died because he isn't very good at it and the work is dangerous. Not every life has to have some perfect meaning or purpose, because in reality people live and die. Some try and succeed, some just fail because they were never meant for great things.


To show that it's not enough to simply want to be something, and that you cannot achieve certain things through sheer willpower. That some people are simply more talented and gifted than others when it comes to physical skill sets. The Hush that lived was living a self-deluded lie that he could catch up to Mika. The Hush who died, died carrying out his role as just another cog in the wheel of Tekkadan, and he played his small part in a larger event, but will never be remembered for it.

My take on each Gundam series that I have seen:

Mobile Suit Gundam: Good for when it came out. Did a good job with the character development, especially Amuro. While there were lots of "suspend disbelief" elements and lots of "rule of cool" these things were done well. What it lacked was me getting emotionally attached to the characters.

8th MS Team: Pure awesome sauce until about half way through. Was supposed to be about grunts but became some god awful preachy mess at the end. Also missed the mark on how war mentally affects individuals. Early episodes were great but it went down hill fast.

War in the Pocket: Felt like a mess. The whole story seemed so unnecessary and Al...god I hatred that child from episode 1.

Stardust Memories: Like 8th MS Team it starts off as awesome sauce but then gets bogged down by idilic bullshit. Writers seem to forget that these are soldiers who actively want to kill, if only to justify their training, and not philosophers. Went off the deep end towards the end but not nearly as fast or as far as 8th MS Team. Also plot holes galore.

Zeta and ZZ: Good and good. Grouped together because there were many manly tears shed during both.

Char's Counter Attack: Pointless but awesome. Left more questions than answers and I think the VERY end was a bit contrived.

G Gundam: What the fuck did I just watch? No seriously. How did this get the green light?

Wing: First series I ever saw. Though it was pretty cool. Got too idyllic towards the end for my tastes.

Endless Waltz: I actually really liked it. While preachy it is one of the few times I feel the preachy-ness was done right.

SEED: Not as bad as /m/ says. Tired too hard to be MSG. Would have really like to see Flay be the main POV. She start off a bitch but ends a manipulative bitch who starts to buy into her own manipulations. I <3 Flay.

SEED 2: Was utterly pointless. Not poorly done but just utterly pointless.

IBO/IBO2: I like it so far. I do think there are too many side characters but they do a decent job of making you care about them. I did audibly gasp when Hush died and did cry manly tears when Biscuit died. I do like the long-drawn out death sequences. I wouldn't mind either a 3rd season or a show that takes place in the same AU later on, focusing on a different group of individuals.

I was more upset about Hush than Mcgillis desu. Hush dying feels like a copout because they didn't know what else to do with him, but I like that Mika finally acknowledged him. G-reco was unironically a good story, that perhaps didn't make what was going on perfectly clear to everyone. I think it helped watching it while it aied for me at least. Whenever I missed something or had any questions they were answered in the /m/ threads.

IBO has some really good moments, but I think for the most part it just kind of flirts with the idea of being good. The first season had some of the worst pacing of any mecha I've seen, and had looong stretches of fucking nothing happening. S2 is an improvement, but still, outside of the high points it has been mostly mediocre. These last few episodes have admittedly been much better than rest of IBO, but it still has had some bad parts, like Orga's death being telegraphed like nobody's business.

I think that the writer and director did a wonderful job of sticking to their guns in this series.

We all knew that this series could not end happily. We are dealing with child soldiers and slaves. Their lives were devoid of value or meaning. They journeyed to scrape together a living and make something of their lives, something to call their own.

Have you ever heard the story of that one child soldier that lived long, made it big and had all of his dreams come true? No? Neither have I. The writers goal was to analyse this aspect of war. These kids will die, some spectacularly, but most unceremoniously. Often quick and simple. Meaningless. Just as they started.

Gundam falls often falls into two categories:
We have our war in the pockets that wants to dissect an aspect of war and its repercussions (IBO falls into this category). And we have our 00 were our mobile suits are sleek and we are here to destroy all the neat-o-things (power fantasy).

TL'DR: Your enjoyment of IBO depends on the lens you view it with. I liked it.
