Great scene, especially when Gaelio pushed his hand away and McGillis showed that his friendship was true by listening to Gaelio's request to let him take revenge. Loved how McGillis admitting his feelings of guilt showed that Gaelio was just being fooled by another mask of McGillis' this whole time even after becoming Vidar and confronting him. The music it played in the scene when Macky started his suicide rush was great. For sure my favorite episode in the season.

You know what I just realized?

This whole story between Macky and Gali is the same as Guts and Griffith. Charismatic power-hungry chuuni voiced by Sakurai with a flying bird motif betrays and kills all his friends and his best friend so he can have the power to fulfill his ambitions. Making the likeable characters that I've had time to empathize with die for the sake of no-name shitters that nobody remembers doesn't make me feel "bittersweet", it makes me resent those faggots and the writers that think killing a character is the only way to end their arc.

Sometimes a character needs to die because there's nowhere else for them to go, like Orga, but ending a series with every relateable or enjoyable character dead is just lazy and it never has the shock value the writers think it will, especially when everyone's been throwing up death flags for the whole season. I fell out of love with this show well before the start of S2, but if it really ends in such a boring and predictable manner I'll be real disappointed.

Fill it out, anons.

While it's clear who the protagonists and antagonists of the show are I do find it interesting just how hard it is to identify the heroes and villains. Actually it's hard to tell with McGillis and Gaelio where those two fall on the antagonist/protagonist line.

Still even though Rustal is a clear antagonist it's hard to consider him a villain. He hasn't really done anything that bad. He acknowledges the issues with Gjallarhorn. He laments having to do some of the shadier things he does. Ultimately he has just been defending the status quo from violent revolutionaries which is what every other Gundam hero has done.

UC Gundam usually acknowledges that the Federation has problems but that Zeon cannot be condoned regardless, and that's where Rustal is. Gaelio feels the most like a hero in the story but is technically on the bad guy team. McGillis has been an ally of the main protagonists and supported them unfaltering without betrayal, and yet he feels the most like a villain even if it just turned out to be rape induced chuuni delusion.

Nothing would change despite his sacrifice, and his sacrificing of others, because changing human nature isn't that easy.

Tech regression isn't comparable to nuclear winter. They're both extremely destructive, but in the case of nuclear winter, you literally cannot live on the Earth. Besides by Turn A and G-Reco's point in time, the Space colonies had been so devastated themselves thay they were nowhere near the industrial heights thay they had achieved in the heyday of UC. Zeta built up the entire cast though. You got to learn who they were, including the main fucking character. Also when characters died, they didn't have huge amounts of death flags and focusing an episode on them to show off a tragic back story (everyone in Ibo fucking has one). The Turn-A used the Moonlight Butterfly to wipe out all technology on Earth, but only after years of war during which nuclear missiles were used quite often. The Black History is basically one long war (i.e. UC) with the Moonlight Butterfly as a capper when someone got sick of it, not just the Moonlight Butterfly. The holographic records played in the mid-40s are basically saying as much. That's part of why the discovery of nuclear missiles mid-show is such a huge point - because the Moonrace have records of how devastating they were when used during the Black History, and even if most of it is redacted, the taboo of nuclear weapons isn't. The main reasons that the Moonrace left isn't because the Moonlight Butterfly wiped out all tech, but because they thought life was impossible on Earth due to nuclear radiation. Them leaving for so long because of simple tech regression doesn't even make sense, because you can simply wait till the Moonlight Butterfly peters out and then return immediately if that's the only problem. They left for millenia because the Earth was soaked in too much radiation and they thought it unlivable. It wasn't. Nor is a nuclear winter unsurvivable the way you're inferring. Surviving it would be extremely hard, but not impossible. Especially for a society capable of building nuclear shielding.

Additionally, use of the Moonlight Butterfly basically enacts it's own artificial winter like in the webm. And that's after using it for only a few minutes across maybe a single mountain range or county. Something that still ended up causing hurricanes and electrical storms that blacked out the sky below a given altitude. If used across the entire world? Yea, I'm pretty sure that level of weather fuckery is going to have a cascade effect that'll fuck up the weather cycle around the globe for at least a few years, if not decades, with repeated hurricanes and storms as well as little sunlight filtering though.

Nanoskin is almost certainly an inert form of the Moonlight Butterfly nanites, considering that nanoskin not only protects stuff from being eaten but is what Horace (the Moonrace engineer) calls the nanomachines repairing the Turn-A's head too if I recall. Regardless, balking over it not have destroyed all tech because there were a few suits and a mass driver buried underground covered in a special coating is being pretty finicky. No, it's not literally all the technology, but the difference is so negligible that most people wouldn't care to make the distinction.
