The proportions are pretty outside Gundam's usual stuff even discounting the hoverboard gimmick. It seems deliberately designed to subvert the tendency towards square shapes and straight lines used in most UC Gundams. I'm not surprised it gets a lot of hate from people who like those and care about visual continuity in the setting.

Personally, I really dig the design. I don't usually like Gundam designs in general though and that's probably a contributing factor. I'm glad to see them trying new things.

I wouldn't mind this design if it wasn't supposed to be a Universal Century Mobile Suit. Alternate UC or not, it just doesn't fit in. There's nothing inherently wrong with the design when taken on its own, it just clashes horribly with Every Single Thing around it.

It's not an awful design, it's just weird. I guess you're right about the Turn A thing, since the Atlas is mostly curves and rounded edges as well, rather than sharp lines and boxes.

Atlas doesn't resemble any late UC suits that much, it's a unique, original design, the main things making it look drastically different from normal Gundam designs are spherical joints and a complex paint scheme, nothing about it looks that unbelievable to build six months after the one year war.
OYW mecha designs have shit like the Zeong's hand beams, yet binders and a tri-rail gun are absurd?

The Ova fixes a lot of the problems design wise.

What I dislike about the Atlus is that it honestly looks great in its base form, carrying simple armaments.

But the moment they slapped on the huge dumb shit, it just loses a lot of its appeal for me.

That kind of design worked with the FA Gundam and Zaku because they had been reworked into a bulkier frame to fit the context of giant death machines with boosters and shields strapped onto them, but Atlas is a lot slimmer and seems flimsier because of it.

In the design's defense, however, I also believe that the author of the manga has put the bulky equipment to good work and has crafted some good scenes that use them.
