Help me out, /m/.
The only things he remembers about it is that it was from the 80's and had a dub.
I'm drawing a blank at the moment, but the mech ponytail part sounds familiar.
>>15352935
probably one of those 80s edgy OVAs that got imported en masse to the US without censoring and never rereleased. Tough luck with that one.
pony tail robot?
closest I can think of is Ginrei Robo...
Tekkaman Blade 2?
"I remember in one scene they do an x-ray or a display of the cyborg girl in question and it shows her to be completely robotic under the skin and I always thought it was funny that her ponytail was "metal" too. Then again she may have fought with it outside of the robot too; I can't remember."
This is a little too out there. Do you at least remember some colors?
>>15353086
No, the girl was never bad
>>15352935
Zeorymer?
>>15352935
>"I watched it dozens of times as a kid"
It would help if we knew what time period we're talking about here.
>>15353147
He says it couldn't have been later than the late 80's
>>15352935
Hey OP, show him this list and see if any of the titles look familiar
http://www.yk.rim.or.jp/~akira_t/rbdble/crnloge.htm
He says the robot designs looked less intricate than those in Zeorymer
>>15352935
What country/channel did it air on, and what year did air?
>>15353174
He rented it at the video store in the USA. He watched it no later than 1989.
>>15353174
This.
timeframes and locations are pretty important for WHAT IS THIS threads, not just ones on /an/
>>15353186
TV series/OVA/movie?
>>15353197
He thinks it's most likely an OVA.
Was it dubbed?
Orguss 2, Iczer One, Cat Girl Nuku Nuku...
>>15353205
all localized after 1989
Wait a minute...
Was this...
Was this BUBBLEGUM CRISIS?
Black Magic M-66, Bubblegum Crisis, Gall Force, Megazone 23...
Dangaioh?
Le Deus?
Borgman / Borgman 2nd?
Project A-Ko 2 or 3 or something?
>>15353226
>Magazine
>ponytails
Are you just reading a wiki or something?
>>15353241
Well the OP's description doesn't really call to mind anything anyone here recognizes, so OP may have some details mixed up. That happens with old memories sometimes.
>>15353241
>Implying there's no ponytail in M23.
>>15353244
I linked him the thread. He says the ponytail cyborg girl looks normal outside of the mech suit, and that the mechs were full size
>>15353119
>x-ray or a display of the cyborg girl in question and it shows her to be completely robotic under the skin
That really sounds like one scene from Zeorymer.
>>15353226
There are no ponytails, cyborgs or giant robots in Black Magic M-66.
Only a badass reporter girl, a new waver ditz, and two cute robot musclegirls.
>>15353248
Is that a cyborg/android? Hmm! HMMM?!
>>15353269
OP just talked about "mechs", not "giant robots". Moreover his memories are probably mixed between different anime.
>released on VHS in 80s
>dubbed
>mecha
Very likely something from Harmony Gold or Saban. Instead of an OVA it could have been those one of those 3-4 episodes of a TV series made into movie type things that were popular back then
That's about all I can narrow it down to. Maybe try looking through their catalogs
>>15353277
viz media and media blasters can also be amongs them
>>15353257
>the mechs were full size
What does that mean?
>>15353275
dude are you serious, it says giant robots fighting right in the screencap
>>15353284
Nah assuming OP's friend is right about being no later than 1989. It can't be them since they didn't come in until the 90s
Additionally it could've been a knock-off korean anime that a few small distributors would release
>>15353301
Find the anime or GTFO. Stop the "You wiki", "It's not that", "You didn't read". Just find it yourself or shut up.
>>15353315
This is some hardcore deflection, wiki-kun. Holy shit. Where do you people come from?
>/m/ being helpful
And they say this board is dead
>>15353312
>it could've been a knock-off korean anime that a few small distributors would release
I've been wondering about this too. OP's description RRRREALLY doesn't sound like any one particular anime -- it sounds more like some kind of mashup of various productions.
OP here. I'm very thankful for you guys' help. Plz don't fight.
>>15353315
take your own advice, fruity pebbles
>>15353344
>OP here. I'm very thankful for you guys' help. Plz don't fight.
Aw. I like this guy.
Hey OP, would you maybe ask your friend if he's certain it was Japanese anime, not some knockoff Korean animation, or even maybe some American cartoon? (Although I can't imagine which one it might have been, if the latter.)
And have you checked with him to see if it's Bubblegum Crisis?
>>15353326
>>15353359
Find it samefag.
Any of these look familiar?
http://www.anime-games.co.uk/anime-reviews-by-title.php
>>15353389
or these?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_anime_in_the_United_States#1980s
This is a picture of -all- Japanese mecha shows released in the 80s. It has to be one of these, or alternatively, he has some details mixed up like some people suggested.
I can post the 90s version if he's unsure about the date.
>>15352935
It honestly sounds like the sexaroid episode from Bubblegum Crisis.
OP, please check Cybernetics Guardian.
>>15353405
Those images don't actually feature all of them.
That one for example lacks stuff like Delpower X, Good Morning Althea and Space Family Carlvinson.
>>15353429
>Delpower X
>Space Family Carlvinson.
Damn Anon, those are some deeeeeeep cuts. Kudos!
>>15353423
Cyguard's not a bad guess, actually. Or Genocyber or Gaiarth? Even if they're all too old, I think... maybe?
>>15353429
>Delpower X, Good Morning Althea and Space Family Carlvinson
Jesus fuck man, how do you even HEAR of stuff like this.
>>15353472Sure as hell not through Gunda/m/
>>15353472
Being an oldfag, I watched them when they came out, raw, on VHS, rented from a well-hidden store on the 5th floor of a business tower in midtown Manhattan. Going there was my after-school ritual.
>>15353470
Yes that kind of stuff. AD Police Files, Battle Angel Alita, Armitage III...
>>15353472
There used to be a 80s thread that lasted for quite some time, you learn some good shit there. Then it took a break.
>>15353405
not OP, but post the 90s version anyway, please
>>15353367
He said it wasn't BC.
>>15353521
Here's the full version with titles
>>15352935
It's Taekwon V.
>>15353489
Suck my dick.
Maybe Birth ?
The heroine has a ponytail, there are robots, it had a dub. It was available in VHS around 1986 under the names Planet Busters and The World Of The Talisman.
Prefectural Earth Defense force?
Buddy said
"Suburban Japan from what I can remember. The robots were kinda squarish and clunky. One was called "the fencer" or something like that and had a sword arm that I think he could shoot the blade out of."
Moldiver?
>>15353875
Moldiver was 90s wasn't it?
>>15353875
Main character was definitely a guy according to buddy
Voltar the Invincible.
I just wanna see this ponytail mech
yeah this is probably Tae Kwon V lol
Do you think you could troll /m/ into a wild scavenger hunt by just making a show up?

Well I'll be damned. Taekwon V aka Voltar The Invincible must be it.
What does your friend say, OP?
>>15354197
That'd be creative and our shitposters are lazy, unimaginative sperglords.
>>15354197
What is crazy is /m/ would probably find a show that fits the criteria.
>>15354197
It's happened. Early 2008, I think? Someone posted about a Kageyama cover of Eye of the Tiger. We searched for months, to the point where a guy actually imported a Japanese Rocky 3 DVD. Needless to say, it didn't exist.

Why didn't you block-over your profile pic while you were at it?
>>15354415
pfft hahaha
I always fuck these up.
Thanks everybody. I was the friend who asked about this and that shit has been driving me crazy for years trying to figure out what it was.
It's clearly a pretty crappy show compared to today's stuff but back then it was pretty awesome and apparently won a bunch of awards or something. They remastered it recently apparently too.
Thanks again everyone can't thank you enough!
>>15354426
Next time, Rob.
>>15354455
Hey, we dig giant robots after all.
>>15354456
I'm the other guy, but good cyber sleuthing skills
>>15354279
That's cruel and hilarious
>it turned out to be fucking taekwon v
This has been a great thread.
