You have to remember that anime itself is still rather niche. A more commonly-known niche, but still niche all the same. Just because a show is well-liked by it's niche audience doesn't mean it will be as well-liked by outsiders, otherwise known as the general public. We actually have the perfect example of this with Toonami airing Jojo's Bizarre Adventure with it being huge online and got a bunch of spread through the memes, but then flopping hard in both video sales and Toonami performance. Same thing happened to SEED over a decade ago.

Let's be real here, how much do you guys see IBO around the internet? The show didn't make that much of an impact in comparison to shows like Attack on Titan, One Punch Man or Kill la Kill. Hell, Yuri on Ice even got mentioned on South Park. It also didn't do so hot on Toonami.

Here's the thing, we all know IBO has problems. Let these guys praise the ever-loving crap out of the show. Just let them, and when outsiders attempt to get into it the chances of it being seen as overrated increases in proportion to the amount of praise it got. Those scores and reviews will hurt the show more in the long run than we ever could.

There's a lot I like about IBO.

I really disliked the first season, and most of S2 was boring. This was because I didn't like the 'protagonists'.

But this final arc? They're getting their tits put through a wringer, and I love it. I love the fact that McGillis was such an emotionally stunted man-child, so literally asshurt, that his plan centered entirely around stealing Bael and no backup.

I especially like that Bael turned out to just be a decent Mobile Suit, not a superweapon. And now the whole cast is getting fucking stomped. I'm actually really hoping they lose, and crawl away for the 'moral victory', because fuccccckkkkk all of them.

I want to see things play out to their logical, bloody conclusion. S1 was the cocktease, this is the moneyshot.

I'm not even sure I remember who Almiria is.

A while ago, I felt that this series was badly disappointing because it didn't live up to the concept: A group of child soldiers fighting an increasingly desperate series of battles that lead to increasingly Pyrrhic victories and finally a crushing defeat.

This is more what I was hoping for. I honestly find most of the main cast unlikeable. (Also, I think this show has a surprisingly low number of robot fights, especially for Gundam.) It's worth saying that Mika is such a non-character, becoming double-crippled hasn't affected his characterization at all.

It's not really hard man. Last season, despite it's issues, heavily favored the protagonists. Tekkadan got their happy ending, only two named characters die (and one was in the first episode), everything just worked to support them to the audiences cheers.

There are plenty of examples. People who wanted Naruto to end up with Sakura only to become enraged when he married Hinata (really though, Sasuke is the love of his life). Or you have people upset Ichigo ended up with Orihime rather than Rukia. Oreimo's ending completely destroyed it's fandom, and you'll have people dropping shows when a character they like bites it. IBO is bad pretty much for the same reason AGE is bad. It sets up a very interesting world, characters with a lot of potential for growth, a story that sounds amazing in concept, and then just bungles the execution in every single possible way. IBO always chooses literally the worst, lamest, laziest, most hack-writing piece of shit anticlimactic direction for every single development and concept. It's honestly kind of impressive in its own way.

Pretty much the only thing they've done right is that McGillis' total implosion has been absolutely hilarious so far.

I agree. IBO sounds great on paper, but personally it doesn't deliver. The PMC and mafia aspects could have been great, bringing some real moral ambiguity to the show, but instead we aren't meant to question Orga that much, sympathize with Tekkadan when they are crashing, and the mafia are cool guys except for Jasley. The show has no problem bringing out the bane of Gundam, evil adults, in order to set up an easy antagonist to blame the protagonist's setbacks on rather than tackle how their actions and decisions have bit them in the ass. Mika was actually happy when his disabilities resulted in him not being able to achieve his dream of being a farmer, since now he can focus fully on being Orga's weapon. There were some hints he was depressed about his disabilities earlier in the season, mentioning how he slept all the time and how he couldn't help Tekkadan outside of fighting, but it was never really brought to the forefront. Mika, after all, feels more like a sidecharacter in his own series than Naruto. Him being happy he can just focus on fighting rather than getting ready to face life outside of Tekkadan is really fucked up.

But... not uncommon actually. One of the reasons many soldiers reenlist is because after serving, they have trouble adapting to civilian life and dealing with the associated bullshit.

Jasley was just an example. Could have used Rustal having found out about McGillis covering up the murder of that Martian Liberation guy who got those pirates to try and kill Kudelia. It's just one of those moments that could have just thrown those actions back into Orga's face, along with those of the viewers. I don't see how. Mars has already obtained a relative authonomy thanks to Makanai. On other hand it's difficult to side with Tekkadan, especially after their support to an half assed revolution led by a guy who sold his body for his position. That's the narrative promoted by the media and it's quite effective if you think about it.
