Why would someone design a mech with bird-like legs instead of a more humanoid design?
What advantage would the former have over the latter?
>>15344205
Chicken Walkers is like Western standards though.
>>15344205
In the case of the AT-ST, it's to look creepy and inhuman as to let little kids instantly recognize "this is a bad guy thing."
>>15344205
because chicken and goat legs are perfect for high speed, stride and mobility, also its great to crouch compared to humanoid ones

>the chicken was probably eaten that night
>>15344205
Star Wars is the only western franchise to get chicken walkers right. The point of chicken legs is to be lightweight and mobile, unlike this: >>15346147 which is just plain stupid.
>can walk around in the dark without hitting knees on furniture
>can walk right up to things and crouch without knees getting in the way
>every single one of the top 10 fastest bipeds ever to live are all reverse jointed or digitigrade
Monkeys go home
>>15346229
Digitigrade is the best, runs fast like reverse jointed legs without looking as derpy.
Something about chicken legs can handle certain things better
bawk bawk

>Digitigrade is the best, runs fast like reverse jointed legs without looking as derpy.
Well technically Chickens and other modern theropods ARE digitigrade legs, you just don't notice most of the time due to the fact that the whole scaly part of a birds' Leg is actually just the foot and ankle.
The parts you actually eat, the thigh and "drumstick" (tibia) are usually covered in feathers and much closer to the animal's body.
...BUT ENOUGH ABOUT THAT, BEHOLD THE WEAPON TO SURPASS METAL GEAR, CHICKEN GEAR!!!
>>15346682
Chicken Gear?
>>15346682
I'm curious how this picture came to be.

CHICKEN GEAR!!!

I SHALL HAVE MY REVENGE, ON MIKE RAYHAWK!!!
Warhounds have the same joint setup as AT-ST's, but the 'thigh' joint is more pronounced.
>>15344205
So it can fly duh. Stick a rocket and wings on those fuckers. Played a PS1 game called G-police and they ran with that idea. The thin legs fold up and you got a gunship

Fuck yeah G-Police

I only ever played the sequel, Weapons of Justice. Was there ever any more? The ending was a big fucking cliffhanger with the Mars fleet beginning an ambush invasion of Earth. I loved the vehicle variety and the concept art has a cute style to it
>>15350094
Sadly nope. Play the original if you have a chance. You can get it for PC here: http://www.old-games.com/download/6105/g-police
>>15350166
I was lucky enough to stumble upon a site that had concept art for the game. Only posting the mech though since that's what the topic is for. This should be the last one.
>>15350166
Nice. I played it on Playstation back in the day.
>>15350169
It was one of those old games that let you unlock all the concept art anyway, if you got gud. Glad to see it outside of that though
But yeah, it had some of the best chickenwalkers
>Woo hoo, overtime!
>>15344205
>Why would someone design a mech with bird-like legs instead of a more humanoid design?
It looks cool if done right.
>What advantage would the former have over the latter?
None, because it's not physically feasible to make them stand up. They're called chciken-walkers but their leg design is incorrect so it's impossible to create them, whereas humanoids are merely impractical.
>But advantages.
Okay, if you come up with an anti-gravity device, you can make robot dinosaurs that shoot lasers!
I'd say it's worth it.

You, are unironically believe this, aren't you?
>>15352140
Locomotion with and without wheels is a very different thing, anon.
We could make a moving Gundam statue back in the 2000s if we were to be fine with strapping wheels at the bottom.
>>15352149
Creating the structure and making them move is a whole different thing anon. By your word, just by creating the structure of inverse legs is impossible.
>>15352161
Well, of course, that would be wrong to a certain extent.
Still, pretty sure the natuee of the legs would impair the height such a status could have since it would have to support and balance out all the weight on a bent angle.
>>15352169
But then, its just deducted as impractical compared to regular humanoid legs rather than completely impossible to build.
Btw, i wonder why there's no rollerskating gundam show yet, rather that we've got spindly box with legs and it's wierd, weenie mono wheel with even more weird placing.
>>15352220
But Sunrise made Code Geass.

Haha, what
>Be human
>Walk backwards
>DO THE IMPOSSIBLE
>SEE THE INVISIBLE
ROW ROW FIGHT THE POWAH
Nothing alive has true reverse jointed legs, but that's because such a thing is astoundingly unlikely to evolve, since terrestrial life has been going down the path of conventional jointed (inc. digitigrade) limbs for over 300 million years. Mutating the genes for the development of limbs will almost certainly just end up with birth defects.
If you're doing a biped from scratch without literal eras of legacy code base, there's not really any universally true reason to prefer one over the other. Hell, you could make the "knees" slide joints and put them out to the fucking sides and it would still be fine.
