Eh, it's fine. Boring and unremarkable, but nothing egregious. It's not like most people who'll insult it had any intention of seeing the movie for money anyway. Myself included.
>>
It looks like someone ran a Tachikoma through a trash compactor.
>>
Bit more crab than spider, I think.

The most distracting part is the 90 degree corners of the front of the head region. If you lopped those corners off it'd improve the design by a bit.

Otherwise, I think it's alright.
>>
>>15341834
That's what baffles me. Who is this movie for? Obviously they are adapting GitS for name-recognition, but no one who knows the anime on even a basic level will want to watch this. Is this just a case of boomer producers' obliviousness (or senility) reaching a fever-pitch?

Not any you'll recognise anyway, no. This'll be a big power/playing God cautionary tale if the "you died, we brought you back" shit in the trailers is any indication. The chances they didn't play a hand in Motoko's death with ulterior and evil motives are near zero.
>>
>>15341965
>It's so flat, where is the pilot supposed to sit?

It's likely not piloted. Do you just not know anything about this series?
>>
>>15341994
Well that's lame.

I mean not by itself. It's a fine type of plot that usually works fine and has a healthy moral. The original Robocop does a good job with it for example.

But all that shit is just Motoko's daily bread n butter, not a shocking twist. She starts out the 95 movie already fed up with the world and with her cyborg body, and she spends most of the manga being cynical and selfish as fuck.

And it doesn't look like Scarjo would be able to successfully portray a young, naive, idealistic wannabe-superhero whose hopes and dreams were twisted and used for evil by the bad guys anyway.

So they picked the wrong character, the wrong franchise and the wrong actress for their story.
>>
They won't have the balls to show Scarjo ripping off her own arms and falling like a ragdoll in her vain attempt to take the tank down
>>
>>15342109
Honestly that wouldn't make up for the rest of that shitshow but I wouldn't mind watching that.

Not for masturbatory purposes like I do with the original scene but just because it'd be funny.

Thanks for the visual example, hollywood.
>>
>>15341737
This is baffling.

The smart-tank from the movie and from the manga are PERFECT examples of designs that would translate SEAMLESSLY into a live-action format.

They just had to copy the original design.

And they kept the basic concept, but somehow, SOMEHOW, they managed to fuck it up and make it look boring.

It's like they had a pitch meeting and asked themselves "okay, how can we make it look recognizable, as close to the original as possible, but WITHOUT making it look cool?"

There's no other possible explanation. It takes maliciousness to fuck up a design as efficient and live-action-ready as the smart tank's.
>>
>>15342014
I've read the manga and watched every installment of GITS.

Every spider tank I can remember had room for a pilot, with the exception of Arise.

"The movie-going public doesn't know the crazy spider bots all over this franchise so make it look like a tank with legs because it's the future and they'll accept it more easily"

Something like that is my guess.

With the Geishas I can sort of understand since they were luxurious models so they were made to look like vintage craftsmanship.

But with guns you can go nuts. Even today we have companies that try to push exotic designs.

Quite breathkating. It's like they went out of their way to get everything juuuuuust wrong, like, not wrong enough for it to be outright wacky like in DB:Evolution, but just wrong enough for it to be underwhelming and pointless despite being recognizably similar to the source material.

They landed right in that sweetspot that lies between "mediocre but serviceable" and "laughably shitty". There's gotta be some legit craftsmanship and talent involved in creating an adaptation that just gets everything so consistently wrong without going into funny-bad territory at any point, and without accidentally creating something fresh and interesting in the process. They carefully, skillfully avoided giving their work any strong redeeming qualities while still making it look sleek and professional.

I'm very impressed by this display of systematic shortcomings and high-grade mediocrity.

All talentless hacks should learn from them.

You think 9mm is going to stop anything in the cyberpunk future?

Besides it's already an improvement, you don't have to deal with the utterly bizarre shoulder stock of a real Tommy.

Also yknow they tend to use props in films that can fire blanks for these sorts of things anyway. I mean there's clearly a logistics matter that informs the movie's choice of weaponry prop basis.

Just saying.

Oh I remember a fair bit of IT'S GONNA BE SHIT trainwreck spotting surrounding it, and every development leaked out to the news painted an increasingly dire picture to the point of questioning why such a project was greenlit, let alone what it meant for those rumors about Cruise helming an adaptation for Yukikaze.

And yet against all odds it turned out better than expected.

I wanna argue though that Edge benefits from its wildly divergent reinterpretation of the story, it's not a direct adaptation of its source so it gets away with doing a lot of original content hoohah. GITS2017 feels like it's suffering the opposite problem, being enslaved to a sort of arbitrary need to be exactly like GITS in its previous incarnations, yet having enough deviations to it that you begin to question why they didn't play it a bit more loose so as to tell a more original interpretation of the franchise's lore, one informed by but not bound to the groundwork laid by past installments.
>>
>>15341737
bad director, made bad decisions, hire bad artists, end of the story.
>>
>>15343296
Yeah, EoT was its own thing. It was a basic action movie that used AYNIK as a source of inspiration to come up with a cool plot.
GitS2017 is a basic action movie (Robocop2014, more precisely) that uses GitS as a marketing tool.
There's only two ways to make a decent GitS adaptation: make something that's inspired by the source material but has its own merits and doesn't rely on clumsy tidbits of fanservice, or faithfully copy the source material to make high quality fanservice that really nails everything people like about GitS.

This is neither.
>>
>>15343305
You think the director had any say in this? He's a director-for-hire whose only previous job directing a gritty fairytale movie.

They just need him to sit in a chair, follow the orders and say "action" and "cut" at the right moment.

What the fuck

Since when does the major need a mother figure?

Doesn't she already have grampa Aramaki to look after her?

Is this some Robocop2014 bullshit with a thin coating of SAC over it or something?
>>
>>15344423

I asked myself; "Would I bother to even pirate the film?"

My answer was No. And that meant I will not be wasting my time to watch it in a cinema.

The last time I thought this way, was Dragonball Evolution. I saw a youtube clip of the film, and close the webpage to save bandwidth. Some films are so bad that it isn't worth the elections to display it.
>>

a dude on /a/ saw it.

he's being very generous with it because he likes "the visuals" but he still says that ScarJo sucks ass, that the dialog is horrendous, that the tank scene sucks, that the plot was mostly predictable and that apart from one action scene it's pretty much exactly how we think it is.

Don't bother.
>>

>>

An irresponsible brat can't be a mother figure.

She never acts motherly with her team she's just inspiringly tough. Just because she's female and bossy doesn't mean she's a mother figure. As a matter of fact, she's the one who occasionally (rarely) seeks comfort from Batou instead of providing it.

Wouldn't this ones flatter body it has distributes the load better?

If you look at the Spider Tank in the animated film it's body is higher up and fixed onto this thinner part. Wouldn't it thus be more top heavy as oppose to the live action's tank with a lower centre of gravity and better load distribution for its body.

Gets TTGL: Gurren Lagann gets smaller every time it combines
Gets Evangelion: Adapts Rebuilds instead of NGE. Evangelions become generic robots instead of biological clones of Adam wearing armor
Gets Transformers: Turns Starscream into a generic looking metal robot, and gives Optimus Prime some *ahem* "cool" flames on his side (oh wait)
Gets Gunbuster: Removes Gunbuster in favor of RX-7's due to Gunbuster being "too unrealistic". Jung and Coach are no longer in the movie, Noriko gets none of her character development, and stays a whiney bitch the whole movie, Amano is played by a black girl, and anyone who complains is a racist, Nono and Lal'c show up with literally no explanation, and Megan Fox plays a new character named Sarah, who gets all the focus instead of the characters people actually care about. The movie ends with the characters blowing up Venus, because the aliens are fron there in the hollywood version, and there's so many explosions it makes Michael Bay cream his pants
>>

>Arppegio of Blue Steel
Iona is a Montana-class battleship for no fucking reason. She can transform into a new sub mode, fly, angle-fire her degeneracy cannons like a LFO laser, hack enemy ships, and one-shot the cruiser mooks of the not!IJN enemies.

Iona is also probably either a hardlight hologram or some admiral's daughter stuck on board after being "infused with the ship's core", whatever floats the execs' boat for obligatory bitch-in-arm scenes.

>Blassreiter
Might actually emerge unscathed since the designs are pretty close to being right up Hollywood's alley.

>Gargantia:
Chamber would literally a bigger reboot-design Robocop. Not inherently bad in itself, and the West loves to do bro AI and usually succeeds, but since we're talking about Hollywood's attempt, they pretty much fucking fail by giving it the personality of an Autobot extra where half the time the lines are indecipherable mumbling muxed with the sounds of someone fishing around in a can of spare bolts and nuts.

>Mars Daybreak
Another donut steel with resistance army VS Mars big gubmint. Round Bucklers are turned into power armor diving suits, combat is "totally hardcore" with spear guns and combat knives.

Again, it's the story that suffers, since the anime is already short on what the PS2 game had and the movie will probably cut down even further to "we must destroy big gubmint's floating city", the mecha redesign is subjective.

>Dancouga
Just wait for Power Rangers' release, you'll get a rough idea.

>Extra option: Robotech
The lazy fucks turn "Veritechs" into different flavors of Re-GZ-styled mecha-in-flyers, resembling APUs with sheet-metal wings stickytaped to their back. Destroids are just the mecha without the flyers. Harmony Gold gets rich but still produces zero new animated, comic, or novel series for the next decade. Somehow they only get richer.

In upfront, those upper body are much thinner than the RL shit, and it has more legs with thicker structure for better weight distribution, so at least its LESS retarded (outside of wierd spindly waist that was too exposed and unnecessary height in BVR land)

certainly not!
When she dies, the lab guys will do experiments with her body, they won't sell it for parts. She said so herself.

And there's plenty of uses for a suboptimally-functionning cyborg.

Like, maybe download excel into her brain, and make her join the Operators. She'll fit right in with the other ditzes. You just need to tailor-make a nice uniform for her, because operators are a bit more lithe than her.

And you can still use her as bait. That's exactly what Aramaki did a few times. Plus now that she's got retard-strength she might even turn out to be more efficient than before.
Her investigation skills were always limited to turning invisible and downloading stuff from the bad guys' PC, anyway.

No you need to get your eyes checked. You can't even see it has six legs let alone judge the thickness.
>>
>>15350789
yeah, Wyverns are actually a type of serpent-faery who have a giant ruby in their forehead and sometimes peel off their serpent skin to go bath in the shape of a young woman. At this point they're not vulnerable, but you can try to steal their gem-encrusted skin.

Hey guys. I saw this thread on my phone and got on my PC just to type this out. I'm a 3D animator and actually have some possible insight as to what they actually mean by this. Not saying I'm right, but maybe I can help stir more discussion.

In 2D Animation, you can generally stretch, squash, and make nonsensical movements to get a point across between frames. In 3D animation, your robot or whatever you're animating has to actually move in a way that makes sense because the computer interpolates between every single frame - so you can have the robot turn in a weird way like you could in an anime because the interpolation will show the nonsensical aspect of the movement and make it look bad.

Another example is in /m/ anime - the robots move in flexible ways despite having non-flexible designs that wouldn't allow for that range of movement because it's 2D and they can make small unnoticeable adjustments to the design just for that movement. In 3D, you can't do that - the model can't change drastically between frames.

This is all accentuated when you're putting CGI beside real people. If they don't "follow the laws of physics," you end up with uncanny valley animation that isn't even believable (and not believable in the realistic way, believable as in it doesn't take you out of the film).

That's all, it's not that they're being unimaginative, it's just that there are certain rules of animation you have to follow to prevent it from being uncanny in certain situations - especially when animating something that was originally designed for 2D.

>In designing the dragon [...t]he designers looked at [...] flying squirrels for inspiration

So you're saying that Oshii's spidertank moved in flexible, unrealistic ways, then?

I'm not very familiar Ghost in the Shell, I'm just elaborating on what they meant by "obey the laws of physics." 3D animation is more inclined to act sensically because otherwise it'll be very uncanny valley. For example, something like gif related would be very hard to do with 3D animation.

>"When you see the tank move, you get a sense of when it's urgent, tense or calm. We can't do that because physics"

Wall-E, chappie, the old ED-209, R2D2 were all inanimate objects with personality animated into them. That physics statement really just sounds like a lazy cop out and a way to hide their shitty vfx
>>
>>15351062
Yeah he lost everything, not that a hit piece would be based in facts.
>>
>>15351021
This is pretty accurate, but it's worth noting that you *can* squash and stretch 3d models similar to how you can in 2d animation, but you are actually warping the geometry when you do that, and it's very hard to have it warp the way you want it to over a given period of time due the movement interpolation mentioned.

You can, but it won't look right in CGI that's used beside real people, is the point I'm making. You can get away with stretch and squash on machines in anime, but in 3D with CGI machines beside real people - that's not the case.

The Gaogaigar is always combined. Galeon isn't part of the design; just the insignia of the GGG team. The Super AI-Machines are just the suits the other GGG members ride inside. Mamoru is Guy's kid and has no relevance to the plot other than being the reason why Guy fights. Goldeon Hammer is Gaogaigar's default weapon. "Hell and Heaven" is only referenced vaguely. No courage; it's just only the power of the G-Stone. Also, all the mecha are made of that ridiculous living scrap metal shit from Bayformers.

The 95 Kobe earthquake coincided with the massive success of the GitS movie.

So his life's work was ruined and simultaneously free money started rolling in. His editor also insisted to make him do a GitS sequel so he shat out MMI which is mostly porn + mishandled Orion ideas + random ramblings, but that was probably too much work and he figured he might as well just keep doing porn and selling his IPs to random assholes and occasionally dropping a few ideas and concepts left and right for IG production.

As for his style degradation it's just a combination of his imperfect mastery of digital tools (which he apparently insists on using to avoid having all his finalized work be destroyed again), his exposure to the heroin chic trend of the late 90s, a poor attempt to incorporate early 90s stylization techniques into his own style (you know, the Saber Marionette J stuff), and a general exaggeration of his own style to the point where all the girls look TOO boyish, wiry and sweaty for their own good. Also he seems to have acquired a foot fetish in the meantime, leading him to emphasizing them too much. Textbook case of stylistic degradation and failure to adapt to newer design trends in an elegant way.

Or he simply died in the earthquake and his assistants took over.

And judging from this panel from Orion this is something he had feared would happen for a long time
>>
>>15352896
>it's just a combination of his imperfect mastery of digital tools
This is the most noticeable thing. I had the Intron Depot books from both before and after the Earthquake. His attempts at digital is really nothing like his analogue art. Digital can be good, but he was clearly untrained and wasn't able to carry over techniques onto the computer. And he was playing around with strange digital textures in the after-Earthquake art book.
>>
>>15352922
He's always used digital textures for stuff like glass reflections ever since GitS.

What's really wrong with his digital coloring is that he relies way too much on what EVERY digital artist is taught to use only as a last resort as it is the fakest-looking and cheapest way to shade and color pics:
The photoshop dodge/burn tool
>>
>>15352933
The unfortunate thing is that had he started going digital only in the present day, he would have been better able to keep his old art skills via a proper drawing tablet. But back in the 90's that was just not an option.
>>
>>15352974
As I said the problem doesn't lie just with his use of digital tools. The few bits of Appleseed 6 that survive were already showing signs of stylistic degradation with Deunan's hair getting way too pointy and her body too wiry.
