I'll take hand-based melee combat so long as the suit in question is a custom, not an OC. A souped-up Shining Gundam is easily more believable than Build Burning was.

Doesn't even have to be fully reformed; make the character a ronin-type that wanders around doing solo battles, eventually finding some hapless friends that he makes less hapless and eventually has to rely on for support. Or, let me put it a different way - imagine if Junya from Try was a bit less of a dick and just went around fucking up gunpla mafia guys and bullies. It could be fun, it could easily spill into some out of control hijinks like S1 where the main cast chucklefucks their way into a giant corporate conspiracy instead of some lazy bracket competition anime.

Seriously, fuck bracket competition anime.

As for combat, I'm fine with a fist-based attack as long as it's not the first choice. Or the only choice. Build knuckle was fine as a finisher because the Star Build Strike used its beam sabers and rifle, and using the shield to power up was pretty cool. It got played out a little by the end, but I'll take that over six variations of chicken-how-are-you any day of the week.

No, war is inherently not genki so its a poor fit. What the creators of the recent series should learn is that you need your main characters to be interesting. Expect the next mc to be something other than a one note genki guy or edgester and instead expect a self aware dynamic character.
