It takes a bit to get going, but REALLY gets going once it happens.

Just be sure you start with the right one, the first season is from 2004 and it's all continuous.

I watched the first 17 episodes and I really don't understand the hype at all. It's not terrible at anything but it's just a melodramatic rip off of Evangelion. Doesn't really do anything unique or interesting. I like the dream-like feel the early episodes have though.

Do we know when the beyond is coming out? And any way I can get a refresher on everything that happened up to the end of exodus without rewatching everything?

It doesn't start good. It improves halfway through the original series, but even that is just going from bad to mediocre. The series only gets good afterwards, with the prequel OVA, sequel movie, then sequel TV.

Well I won't speak for everyone but my experience is that the first half of the first series is kinda bland, the second half is pretty good, RoL is good, HaE is good for its runtime, Exodus' first half is 10/10 and Exodus' second half is great but slightly weaker than the first half.

I feel like by the point in the series you've reached, the similarities have become mostly superficial. Also, NGE is heavy on melodrama too.
The staff have made no bones about being *heavily inspired* by NGE. The main battle theme for Fafner is nearly a rhythm for rhythm lift from NGE's Decisive Battle track.
I feel like Fafner does a great deal of its execution extremely competently, and I've never bought into the novelty=quality idea anyways.

18 and 20 are actually some of the better episodes if that helps, and the last few are a nonstop ride. But the sequels might be more to people's taste, less easing in.

It has a small but vocal fanbase on /m/ because if you like it, you really like it. Its major themes are "things that make human existence worth continuing" and "communication is hard and takes forever, especially with aliens."

First half of the first season is so focused on worldbuilding that it's too slow to enjoy. The second half of the first season is great. The remaining installments are either good (Heaven and Earth) or amazing (Right of Left, Exodus).

The girls are all 10/10.
