Gaelio's stance on Rustal's rotten ways was never clarified. He never questions Rustal's plans, when you realize he does seem to have retained his sense of justice, he doesn't seem to believe in change anymore, etc. It's kind of as if Okada were playing ping pong. Being a Garma who lived and a Char aren't mutually exclusive. The Char in IBO is a fluid concept. It's obvious to anyone with a brain Gaelio is the one taking on the traditional, 0079 role of the Char in IBO. He's the strong antagonist with a color coded mobile suit who's out for revenge.
McGillis, him, has the traditional caracterization, he played the role of CCA persona for most of S2, and last episode he evolved into a Quattro. Though Gaelio also has a Quattro side to him whenever he has a scene with Julietta.

It would probably be less impressive than we could imagine given it's Gaelio. He'd be found bleeding with burns across the right side of his face in a wrecked Kimaris Trooper by several nobody Gjallarhorn troops during recovery after the Edmonton finale. He'd be laying in a hospital bed for a month after where Rustal would greet him as a political rival at his lowest moment with Gaelio openly revealing McGillis' nature and it would confirm Rustal's suspicions.

Rustal would probably make a decision there to help Gaelio get his revenge and that would be the end of it

Gaelio is what I call a true idiot, he sees that the world is a horrible place to live unless you're born in the right family or have a lot of money, you have no right to dream and all kinds of crime and slavery are law of the land, the knows that and he knows that his organization cares about the people, just power. What does this idiot do? He takes the revenge before reason path just becuase his crazy subordinate (Ein Muh Crank-Nii) saved him once!

Selfish does not even begin to describe Gaelio but I was not expecting to tem up with MacGuilis after all hell broke loose last time, I just wanted this guy to realize how messed up this world truly is and maybe do something about it. I wish he was more self-aware about the fact he only cares about himself and his personal friends. Instead we got tough luck, this is the way the world is and can't be help.

Despite all the resent I feel towards most of Rustal's party for all the bullshit they did, they are effectively still the "good guys" in all of this, are they not?

McGillis is a manipulative traitor in every sense of the word and his further involvement with Tekkadan ultimately lead to their destruction as well. If they hadn't continued to work with him during he first half of S2, they would probably be happy at Teiwaz, there would be order back on Earth and Mars, the social situation would've slowly but steadily improved with Kudelia's backing and McGillis would've been taken care of in due time, with the rest of Ghjallerhorn never directly attacking Tekkadan again.

That then would've lead to the Turbines never being backstabbed, Naze and Amida still being alive and Lafter and Azee just continueing their life in Turbines. Granted, the Teiwaz in-fighting still would have escalated eventually, but it's unknown if any major character even would have been killed due to that.

TL;DR fuck McGillis for dragging Orga and the rest of Tekkadan into his bullshit just because neither of the two can wait

The only "unique" thing here is the unarmored Frame in the background. That's not a large plot point in any way.

More like the political commentary is rather ham-fisted. Poverty is a big motivator in the IBO universe, and in the show people are depicted as doing anything they need to in order to survive in a rather positive light. Meanwhile, people from more well-off families are depicted as ignorant of the true nature of the world around them and sheltered.

Now, poverty is a factor in real world child soldier recruiting. Lots of times children do sign up in order to feed their family in more destitute regions of the world, or their because employers can provide them with a bed and meals if they have no family. Kinda like homeless people who commit crimes in order to be thrown into jail during winter. And sometimes kids just want to play heroes when they join up.

So the show gets it right when in this respect, they join up to survive or to live out some fantasy. Kudos to IBO. But I feel the show does romanticize Tekkadan too much, playing up it's positives while downplaying the more negative aspects. It always provides some "evil" adult that's the cause of any setbacks Tekkadan suffers, while their own contributions are glossed over.

With the reactions I've seen over the course of this show, people do identify with Tekkadan and support them but the way they do so... Let's just say, it's like they want the show to be God-Mode Tekkadan/McGillis Gjallarhorn/Rustal/Monkey/Iok/Gaylio-bashing.

Atra being in love with him at least has the excuse of them growing up together, him always looking out for her and Mika being (I suppose) somewhat attractive as well. Her early childhood probably left her with some serious mental issues so falling for a guy able to look after her and accepting her for who she is is a decent enough reason for me.

Kudelia being so into him just seems weird and forced, however. The only synergy the two have is being friends with Atra and wanting to not have kids live in their own shit. Mika saving her ass doesn't warrant her being head-over-heels for him, since everybody has been fighting for her all of S1 and his "deep emotional support" was just Mika being an autistic sperg while she read a deeper meaning into it for no reason.
Fuck, even shipping her with Orga would've made more sense, since they both aim for the same goal, are "leaders" and would have balanced eachother out (him being way too direct while she tried to do things the political way).

It's a real shame they wasted those three. They had a decent foundation for character development and advanced relations with the rest of the cast but were all held back because everyone else was made more interesting so they had to shove them together to even use them at all.

Though I suppose "decent foundation and characters but ultimately wasted for avoidable reasons" sums up IBO as a whole, unfortunately.

That's honestly lazy as fuck. "Muh childhood friend" is the most half-assed basis for romance, and in order to pull it off there's got to be some actual chemistry and there's so little in that relationship it's almost nonexistent.

But yeah, pretty much everything in IBO is wasted. Look at Akihiro, the guy has been through so much and is one of the few characters to get consistent development and focus... but he just never becomes relevant and is basically the eternal background character while the plot orbits a dead fish like Mika.

My god, I am still mad about the whole Lafter thing. It was pretty obvious he'd be too dumb to actually realize his feelings but I did expect her to at least give him a smooch on the cheek.
Even worse was the fact that they then didn't even let him have revenge personally. Whats-his-name's cockpit being smashed by Barbatos was boring as fuck and felt unfitting considering Akihiro and Orga were the two Tekkadan members most hurt by him. They really should've had Akihiro intercept Mika and asking him to finish them off himself, since they even showed how absolutely pissed he was about it. Just glaring angrily and geinsing his teeth as the bridge exploded was way underwhelming.

Akihiro is finally starting to realize what love is and now Lafter might never see him again? Instead of having them actually become a couple they just walk off without Akihiro even realizing what the fuck happened. Then she dies. Then in the battle to avenge her he just kinda floats around in the background killing more faceless shitheads while Mika dunks on Jasley.

Even Mika could have been interesting. This child soldier who has no real concept of morality but understands that his only purpose in the world is he can kill very effectively. And they set him up for development with these little teases that he might develop, like when that Gusion pilot guy says "you just enjoy killing" and he briefly checks himself and is like "do I?" But then he goes "well whatever" and just continues killing, and never thinks about it again.

Even Kudelia could have been interesting, because she's an idealistic character who exists in a setting that shits all over idealism. But they never actually went anywhere with that. She just stands around uselessly and says some useless bullshit like "I want to become hope."

IBO is the biggest waste of potential since AGE.
