I hope that's not the case though, Orga would most likely die for Mika. Eugene can't have the weight of abandoning Shino in space and then Orga dying for him on his shoulders, he'll just become some heavy drinker and hang himself with his necktie in a closet once there's nothing left to distract him. Gaelio could literally just shoot McGillis in the face from midrange with the Dainsleif lance and there would be nothing he could do about it.

It's bullshit that McGillis' two little swords can even block Gaelio's drill lance head on.

Gaelio has far superior reflexes and control than McGillis, with the Type-Ein letting him fight at berserk Mika's level all the time while still remaining fully rational and free of any side effects.

In every single shot of when they're fighting each other, McGillis is on defense, except for one time and only one time.

Gaelio had McGillis dead to rights not once, but TWO times. The first time, Helmwige Cuckboy saved him. The second time, when Almiria's wound supposedly saved Gaelio, you can see Gaelio pulling his leg up to get ready to drill knee McGillis right through the ballsack. If anything the wound saved McGillis, because he would have lost if he had charged. This was also the only time McGillis could even attempt to make an offensive move against Gaelio.

So McGillis is fighting an opponent far better armed and armored with far more piloting ability who he hasn't even been able to scratch the entire time and the only time he's able to even think about pushing his own offense it would have gotten him his shit knocked in.

Most of their pilots will be dead, they'll be out of their best resources, and they'll all be further traumatized than they ever were before by losing a majority of their comrades. it's a normal bro friendship, there's nothing "pushed together", it actually comes off as a natural bond where two guys enjoy each other's company without being sworn to die and kill for each other and shouting about it to the world every scene they get, or pounding some "theme" into your head. shino has one of the only natural friendships in the show with eugene and one of the only non awkward romances in the show, even if you see it as one sided, with yamagi. just because eugene and shino had natural friendship scenes that show regular familiarity and sticking together without it being this huge intense plot point doesn't mean it's barely noticeable. like, whose friendship among the "first circle" even sticks out among mika and orga, really?

Yeah, the only friendships that feel natural and not stupid as fuck in the series to me are Shino's with Eugene (and the rest of Tekkadan), Orga and Biscuit, Chad and Dante, Akihiro's slow developing friendships with the guys, and Orga and Eugene a little. Takaki, Yamagi and Ride felt like bros too. These are all friendships that I didn't feel embarrassed by when they were on screen.

I think it stands out as two people who are actually comfortable with each other without it being this weird thing. And yeah, Shino is nice to everyone, but he has a special teasing kind of relationship with Eugene where there's more affection there, like he really likes getting reactions out of him but also likes encouraging him (while still giving him backhanded compliments). It's kind of like how Shino has a slightly different way of handling Yamagi too, a little more gentle. I enjoy the friendship a lot. If it doesn't stand out, it's not because of the nature of their dynamic, but because Eugene is underwritten in general and Shino was basically underwritten in s2 until Flauros and up until he had to get development to die. For me, I was more contesting the fact that they're pushed together or whatever, because they are absolutely noticeable in their comfort to me. Eugene isn't really that comfortable with anyone else or closer to most of the other guys other than his huge boner for Orga. You're right though in that none of the friendships get much focus outside of Mika and Orga's repetitive bullshit.

Shino confiding about Yamagi is still confiding. He's going to someone about his feelings not just about Yamagi's crush, but also about wanting to protect Tekkadan. Some people are like Shino: they're just naturally nice to everyone and can become everyone's friend. It's Eugene that makes the friendship a bit more "special", since he is more honest with Shino and winds down with him more than anyone else. Shino basically loves everyone, while Eugene's only two important relationships are Shino and Orga.

No. I know this is /m/ where people will accept anything as long as it is mechanical, but "most" Gundams are not good. In fact even the "good" Gundams usually have some issue like cast bloat or poor pacing.

There are good Gundam entries, but no way in hell is "most" of the franchise good or great.

He truly is a very underutilized guy. I always found his issues with Orga and how he's developed with them to be a more natural support system and it really got untapped. In general he's just wasted potential, they made him nonexistent or an out of character yes man all of season 2. He's popular with fans less because of fujo stuff but more because of fan affection and people wanting to fuck/date a guy like him, I think. Anyway, with the love for him in the polls I think it's obvious he could have been something way more in the show, but they chose to focus on absolutely nothing instead.
