IMO Thunderbolt was about war pushing people to their breaking points, and the shit they're willing to suffer through in order to push back. It's not about the horrible grim-dark depressing state of war, but the manic, chaotic, unpredictability of it, as symbolized by the free-form jazz soundtrack.

And however silly the manga is (by the way, the manga is pretty much irrelevant now to 90+% of Thunderbolt fans) it doesn't invalidate that, by your own acknowledgement, great animation.

I can understand not wanting to watch a demo reel for an hour or two, but the plot is a perfectly adequate vehicle for the real action and atmosphere here. Yeah, sure it may not win any Oscars, but it's not "shit"just because it has a simple plot and doesn't have decompressed story beats.

I honestly prefer watching the 4 episodes.
Two of the transitions in the movie where episodes ended are really jarring.
Episode+end titles then straight into the next is the way to go tbqh bbq. There are a few little bits of animation at the end of December Sky, but no new voicework and it feels really tacked on. I'd really suggest just watching the last tiny bit of animation after watching the 4 episodes.

That's just me though. You can't exactly go wrong, but I've had a friend ask what was up and I had to explain that that was where a transition was. It is noticeable.

Look, the past few years haven't been good for the franchise. We're getting more and more of the AU shit, and then we had Unicorn which rapidly turned into an AU at the end.

Here, this is basically as gritty as Gundam has ever been. You don't even have stupid standbys like Peace Princesses or magical peace particles, it's just the last desperate days of WWII.

The problem with Thunderbolt, at least to me, is that it is very cheap with the "gritty" aspect throughout the run. Sure it was amazing how Io shot a zeek from inflitrating the cockpit, but then there's much more ridiculous things like sending Feddie kids as scapegoat where the themes are just so basic and forced in for the sake of drama. The loss of limbs to pilot the Psycho Zaku, the deus ex thunderbolts, and such really rob the attention to what could have been a amazing story if these plot aspects are either fixed or even taken out. It is fair to say it's a nice step for the Gundam franchise in comparison to recent entries, but Thunderbolt is still lacking a lot of substance and is, from my opinion, far from being a classic Gundam entry.

Also, it gets a hell lot worse with the current manga arc that season 2 is adapting, but I won't put that in the way of how I feel about the show at its peak.

The story of Thunderbolt is very simple. They're trying to take their homeland back, like the Polish fighters or the Cuban refugees in exile. It's not hard to be willing to do everything to do it.

More, it's the last days of the war. Everyone's acting like there's no tomorrow, because there isn't. Zeon is pulling out everything it has, because the situation is really that desperate.

To be fair, that didn't really happen in MSG. In fact, 0079 is really unusual because the final battle is actually a grudge match. Char and Amuro are basically two rival aces, but they're small points in the massive battle.

Like, Amuro never meets Gihren, even though Amuro seems to be able to sense that Gihren is responsible for all this. (He can even pinpoint where he is.) It's Kycilla who shoots Gihren, and it's Char who murders Kycilla immediately afterward.

In a modern Gundam series, Gihren would show up in the Gihren Gundam, and Char / Amuro would team up to fight him. Then he'd give a speech about how he's actually doing all of this because of a power-trip, and waves of Newtype energy would make everyone stop fighting.

I'm pretty sure 00 ended that way.

Well, a lot of their Super Weapons weren't useless.

It was just bungling and user error that caused them to fail at their intended purpose.

Take the Solar Ray. It very well could have turned the tide of Gihren hadn't wasted the shot trying to stop a peace talk.

The Apsalus is another example. It's purpose would have been realized if Aina had followed through with the plan.

As for the Psycommu Zaku, that was only so useful in the long run given you need to have all four limbs replaced with cybernetics to use it properly.

First arc takes place late in the OYW, with most of it occurring during the Battle of Solomon. (The Zeon ship that comes to the rescue is retreating from Solomon). Second arc takes place around 0080/0081, after the war and before Operation Stardust.

Don't worry about canon because Bandai/Sunrise don't give and have been contradicting themselves since the 80s.
