Hey /m/ should I pick this up? Is there anything wrong with the vluray release?
I saw an awesome jap song show up on youtube and one of these niggas had a mech with a cloak.
Looked like some fun 90s 80s shit.
It's an upscale because somehow the materials for one of the most iconic mecha OVAs of the 90s are missing. Or they're just lazy.
Otherwise, go for it.

I can't attest to the quality of the Blu-ray, I think it's just an upscale and not a remaster but I might be wrong. I can however tell you that Armageddon is one of my favourite OVAs out there and an excellent starting point if you want to get into Getter Robo.
The one in the cloak you are referring to is the Black Getter, one of the coolest mecha out there.

Getter is from the 70s.
This OVA is from 1998. It's an alternate continuity thing although it does require you to be familiar with Getter if you want to enjoy it to the fullest extent.
Which in this case, I recommend the manga alongside.

Upscale or not, they're still cleaner than the DVDs, so you can't go wrong either way.
Shin Getter Robo vs Neo Getter Robo was a proper transfer though. I think they might have lost the Armageddon masters, which is why we'll never see it in its full cellular glory.

Alright radical, I know that Getter is a very long running series but I'd like something to jump in on something first then go back. Thanks for the guide pic too! Got Spring break and wanted to dive into a lot of mecha I've missed while also rewatching Fafner.
This'll probably be a fun kickoff.

>I know that Getter is a very long running series
It's only long running if you consider all the spinoffs that were released over the years.
Every entry you see on this chart was compiled into Getter Robo Saga (which includes a few extra chapters with newer art) makes up a total of 9 volumes.
If you only want to get into anime, the 2004 Shin Getter Robo OVA is a better entry point, although it's still vastly different from what you would get if you read the manga. There's also the 2000 Shin Getter Robo vs Neo Getter Robo OVA which is way shorter than Armageddon, so it might be worth a look.
When you consider the totality of modern animated Getter (not the 70s and 90s series), it's only 30 episodes long. Fafner has more.
13 for Armageddon. 4 for Shin vs Neo, and 13 for Shin Getter.
