There's this anime i saw in one of the latter years of the nineties. I have been searching on the internet what it could have been, but i have little concrete stuff to go on.
It centered on a bunch of teens who where marooned near a coastline with their spaceship.
They or the hero at least piloted a humanoid mech.
I think they where charged with guarding or escorting a princess or suchlike, there was some special girl aboard in any case and she was the only civilian i think.
They where being engaged on a regular basis by another teen boy piloting a humanoid mecha but that got destroyed in battle with the hero. From then on the antagonist piloted a lion or wolf mecha which had the moon as a theme.
The show ended with the kids realizing there was some connection between the two mecha that somehow was instrumental in them being able to leave that place... i think.
Help?

NINJA ROBOTS
Late '90s and rival driving a lion point to Ninja Robots. That said, Ninja Robots is now on my to watch list, thanks /m/.
Give it a couple more years and an antagonist piloting a lion could be SEED.

You probably watched the dubbed version. Tobikage is called Cybertron in the dubbed version. The actual title of the show is Ninja Senshi Tobikage while the dubbed version is titled Ninja Robots.
For what gives it off, you have stranded spaceship with people escorting the princess, space ship is the Elshanc/Xenos 5 and the princess is Romina. Civillian/special girl is probably Renny/Jenny, the only girl who is not from Ladorio. The recurring pilot would be Ilborra/Icelander in Mantis and later piloted the Zerokage vs Joe in his Black Lion and later in the Tobikage. This is where it's a little hazy for me but I do know that Tobikage and Zerokage is important in protecting Elshanc and the secret room in it which later helps them returns to Ladorio.
Don't remember if there's a wolf mecha but there's a lion mecha which is the Black Lion which is piloted by Damian after Joe is able to use Tobikage.
OP here. Thanks guys. I think you're right. I'd never heard of "Ninja Robots" -- I only know of Tobikage, and that's from 1985!
(It was a friend who was wondering about the show.)
