By treatment, I mean that. They HAVE to have a main girl in the show so how they use her the fit in and give something to it is the treatment. Akari is always active, always seeking ways to help.
Ultimately, in the grand scheme of things in ghost's plot it isnt as relevant, but its way better than kiriko who is just there as a love interest, or asuna who isnt doing much either. Their ocassional usefulness stems from them being there and maybe giving a motivational talk to the main rider. Hence akari being better than them.
Of course, given ghost is overall a shit show and, say, drive, isnt, kiriko might seem better (aside from looks, on which kiriko wins but they're both good).
