Does it matter what order i do a reverse wash in?
>>
>>15310686
I think you use the color for the emblem or whatever, mask that, then the color for the rest.
>>

>>15310723
Oh, I'm so sorry. I'll just leave it to the dozens of other posters who've helped out so far.
>>
>>15310686
let me rephrase my question, does it matter if you use an arcylic or enamel as your raised parts or fill parts?
>>
>>15310686
>>15310736
the "usual" way for reverse wash is using acrylic or laquer (laquer is preferred) for the raised parts (ex" gold for sinanju). you then do a coat of what you "fill" the parts with (ex" black for sinanju) with enamel. after drying a bit, you use lighter fluid or something similar to rub off the enamel paint, leaving you with the color underneath
>>
>>15310749
adding on to the point, its usually done with airbrush for the coats and do a clear gloss coat inbetween so you dont accidently rub off the coating underneath
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHUYvZXcf_0
heres a vid of it, kinda long but should give you an idea on how to do it
dont be afraid of using youtube to help you on stuff

i might sound crazy, but i think gundam age-1 seems like a good fit. the slim shoulders and the slight curvatures of the arms work very well. the legs seem bulky enough and since they're flat, you can bulk them out even more. unless its an armored version of x, jesta seems way too bulky and x always had slim curvature to his design(to me at least). the only problem is translating megamans x face to a gundam face, but modifacations may work.

tldr; i think age-1 is closer

Asked is the previous thread, what kind of paint i should buy to start painting my adult toys ? Also is it only for details or i can paint big parts like the one that should already be colored instead of having ugly stickers (t. Bandai™)
>>
>>15310073
In response to the sprays and space, I get that. But for hand paints the only thing you need for nice, even coverage of large areas is a primed part (helps paint stick easily) and a page flat brush to get much of the part. Layering and doing perpendicular angles each layer (first up to down and then left to right) hides the brush marks. It might take a few practice parts and learning paint ratios but a well done paintjob makes a lot of difference.
>>
>>15311045
You're intended to paint the entire thing. There's some helpful stuff in the guide that might answer questions before you have to ask them.

What's the most overrated and underrated kit?

Pic possibly related?
>>
>>15311045
for small details, any "hobby" paints should do the job, like testors, tamiya, and mr colors. for big parts, i personally recommend vajellos cause thats what i use, but use primer if you are painting large areas first. but to replace stickers, primer shouldnt be necessary
>>
>>15311078
Gelgoogs as a whole. Not because of movement or fancy detail, but because their design is great and don't see enough love. Not a single Gelgoog custom model in GBF, for example, but there was a Zaku, Gouf, Dom, Kampfer. And it's not that the mold was too old, since the Qubeley Papillon and Build Mk 2 used older frames than the newest Gelgoog in HG scale. Maybe the Revive or Origin lines will feature new ones.

ver ka nu.jpg

>>15311078
From the last thread:

Going to have to throw in another ticket at a Ver Ka for being overrated- the Nu. Especially since I have both it and the original MG from 2000.

It's a kit that's two steps forward, and one step back. It's so bloated with unnecessary gimmicks and poor design choices and feels like a rag doll compared to most other MGs, and it barely poses any better than the old Nu despite all the delicate new joints. The older MG which is one of the most solid kits Bandai has ever made, period. If it had better proportions and the same funnel display stand as the ver Ka, I would easily crown it as the better kit.

And for such an updated kit with high level of parts separation, Bandai couldn't even make the rear head camera separate clear piece and had to reply on stickers? Really? And the worst part about the Nu ver Ka- ALL the crucial joints still use polycaps. Why a 2012 kit is using practices from kits in the early 90s is beyond me, especially when the old Nu uses solid ABS on ABS and even motherfucking screws.

As for underrated kits, all the aquatic MS MG's, and the G04/G05 duo. The aquatic MS are all large and uniquely engineered, while the G-duo are cheap, look great, and come with some of the best accessories of any MG.
>>
>>15311078
Underrated? I say the 3.0. Everyone here recommends the Origin, but I always say to those who ask for what version of the OG Gundam, get the 3.0.
>>
>>15311098
I like the reds on the 3.0 much more than the ones on the origin. The way the torso is sleeker is more appealing to me too
>>
>>15311064
>>15311065
>>15311067
Nice, im reading it, usually you do the painting before building the kit or after ?
>>15311059
I will probably do some testings on my Buster Gundam (its an old ass kit anyway)
>>
>>15311124

Some people paint on the runners, but I prefer to get everything test-fitted and cleaned up before I start painting
>>
>>15311124
Painting tightens joints and pegs, if you want to build it first you can see what areas need to be sanded down to accommodate the paint.

Anon who mentioned the brush, I meant large flat brush, my phone autocorrected.

As for building process what you can do is slightly cut the connecting pegs before assembly so the parts slide apart more easily. Let's you test fit and seperate as needed. If you are painting you will want to cement certain parts with seams together and fill those seams with putty, as without that the model will look very poorly done. The cut pegs won't end up mattering as much if you're cementing things since it will have a tight bond because of the fused plastic, so don't worry, but don't cut too much or else they won't slot in at all.

MG Ground GM. Nice accessories, solid build, decent articulation.
>>

it's fragile as fuck and it's not worth the price tag since it's double the cost of the x1 and has the same issues.

>>
>>15311635
MG if that wasn't obvious.

RG as well now that I think about it.
>>
>>15311635
I'm guessing the reason it doesn't seem like it gets much love is because it's based off of the strike 2.0 frame which is a well loved one. several kits have it so it's kind of pointless to discuss something we all know is good. it's like saying the mg zaku 2.0 frame is great but claiming johnny ridden's zaku gets no love even though it's the same frame.

If they're All Gundam Project-compliant joints (ball-and-socket shoulders, peg biceps, peg thighs), you should be good. Backpacks will take a bit more doing since IIRC none of the Builders Parts/HGBC/HG Customize Campaign adaptors out there specifically address IBO backpack port spacing yet.

So I'm on the fence about purchasing the new MG Freedom 2.0. I haven't even seen the part of SEED it's in, I've only watched the first like 10 episodes or so before I realized I didn't like it, but goddamn the Freedom is a sexy mobile suit. My Barnes and Nobel has it in and I'm tempted, how's the build? Are the wings a bitch to assemble?
>>
>>15312233
Why do you have to watch the series to get the suit?

It's a solid kit, no loose joints. The problem most people have with the kit is the hip joints and how the instructions make you connect the legs in an awkward manner.
>>
>>15312249
>Why do you have to watch the series to get the suit?

I don't, just seems a little awkward for some reason. Like forgetting someone's name and being past the point where you can ask them.
>>
>>15311260
For me it's not because of normies, hell, I have a whole wall of anime posters, it's just that I have certain aesthetic sensibilities and every surface filled to the brim with gundams do not align with those. I want all my models to have breathing room and an interesting pose that make them stand out as their own piece, but I also want to keep building and painting.
Maybe at some point I'll just start giving away completed models to family and friends.

So, I broke a the part on the backpack of my RX-78-02 The Origin that holds the right beam saber. it fell over and the saber handle caught on something and snapped the peg right off. I tried using tweezers to try to pry the peg out of the handle but it just ended up making it worse. Now I noticed that I have one of those nifty Bluefin caution labels on the box. I got the kit as a gift but my brother, who got it for me, kept the receipts for all the gifts he gave out this year so I have that as well. Now does Bluefin still provide replacement parts if I send them a picture of the broken parts, the original receipt from where he bought it, and the Bluefin sticker and UPC, will they still send me replacement parts? I tried looking it up online but I could only get results from a few years ago, what else I can find seems to indicate they'll help me. I live in the US by the way.

Hey all, dumb question but...

Unless otherwise stated, all Builders Parts accessories are for HG models, right? I was cleaning out my storage and came across two old and forgotten hg kits that are still in relatively good shape, but are missing some touches like the head fin. The kits are from 95-97, pic related
>>
>>15313718

Anon, builders parts work well at any scale 1/144 and up. Here's a ton used in my 1/72 to 1/100 ish Macross AoZ kitbash.
>>

Each builders parts set is marked 1/144 or 1/100. They're decent quality and detail, enough to stick out oddly when used with crappy old kits.

I met a gunpla girl at my local hobby shop once. We talked for a bit about how we had the same taste in kits, but then she tried to reach for the kit again so I grabbed it and walked away fast. I really wanted that GM.

Don't bother. Women don't care about anyone or anything but themselves. Some -SOME- will care about their children, but other than that the only thing that will ever matter to a woman is her status. Everything else is just a facade. It's all a framework to support their ego. To women, men are just dirt to be walked on or stepped over to get to somewhere else.

Thanks! I see gunpla sometimes fall along three basic color groups: desaturated colors + grays (military style group), bright saturated glossy colors (sportscar style group), and bright flat primary colors (sell plastic merch style group).

If you're gonna buy your first kit you might as well get something that looks cool.

I see. Not that the insight isn't good - as I'd never categorized it that way - but what was your inspiration for those colors?
Just stumbled upon it eventually or is it the color scheme of something else perhaps?

I just needed an accent color closer to Titans blue than the banana yellow original. That helps to set off the complementary reds of warning waterslides and warheads.

It isn't canon but I like this color set well enough!
>>
>>15315974
The green really helps it feel more real and military for obvious reasons, but not overly so. I know I'm also biased my enjoying green as a top colour.

Ever toyed with the idea of making a base display for it? I suppose it's too early to let the Gundam get comfy like that when it's not even done.

The little 'tufts' of fiber optic and green colours are putting thoughts of a hunting themed Gundam in my head. But the thought of a Gundam that literally stores mass amounts of meat during a hunting trip is odd to say the least.

How resilient is fully cured acrylic paint on primer? Can I paint joints with acrylics and expect them not to get scratched?
>>
>>15316657

I think acrylic, even fully cured & topcoated, is not as strong as lacquers; I sand down joint parts before painting to create a little tolerance/headroom.

I've been painting parts with a lot of movement with lacquers so far. But sanding a little makes sense.

How do the lacquers hold up? I've stuck with acrylics so far since they're less fume-y. I bought a finished build (lacquer painted) off someone and the paint is not chipped anywhere I can see except the thumb and waist ball joints. Not even mad about it.

>Neo Tokyo OST,
Hello new game and OST, thanks.
>>
>>15316896
No paint is going to withstand joints. Plastic is just too hard. You'd need to like coat it in resin or something to protect it and it'd still wear away over time or scratch.

Otherwise lacquer is very tough. If you accidentally scratch it with your nails you might think it's just like plastic whereas acrylic would come off right away. Of course, it depends on how you scratch it.

I finally finished the astaroth I was working on for a while, I learned a ton about painting from it too. Anyone know why the paint came out with so many bumps?

I don't mind it much for the look of this kit, but I want to know how to prevent it for my next couple of kits. Did I primer it wrong or something?
>>
>>15316937
you can't hide your sideways picture from me I saw the whole thing!
anyways I'm no paint expert but I think wrinkly bumpy paint is a sign you didn't leave enough drying time between coats
>>
>>15316928

Ha! I bought it originally to hold a pre-shaded painted kit in my hands and see how that looks before investing in an airbrushing setup....which I still barely use but anyway. Preshaded stuff looks cartoony to me too, but that's just a personal preference.

I'm more of a Titans colors person but the (Sengoku Astray?) painted build was a useful teacher to me at the time. 8/10 would buy a more-skilled builder's expertise again to learn stuff.

Anon, we know you painted and primed, what kind of paint? How many layers? How much dry time? Humidity? Spray distance?

>>15316951

Agree, it looks like the newer layer solvent attacked the older layer while still curing and partially ate it?
>>
>>15316970
Like this and other anon said, it could very well be the paints eating into each other if it looks bubbly. Or it is possible the paint started to freeze in the air and just clumped onto the kit. Was it cold when you painted?

>>
>>15317052

>>
>>15317062
I'm stuck in small town murica so I had to get all that airbrushing stuff online or via train to Chicago, which has some nice shops.

Anyway a little goes a long way so get flow aid/retarder/thinner/cleaner/medium as you can.
>>
>>15317134
so flow-aid is similar to thinner? I did thin my paints before airbrushing them on, but I'm not completely sure I got the ratios right. But I'll look into seeing if any stores carry flow-aid and such. Thanks.
