She had a bunch of training in her Eva and look how well that worked out for her. Asuka's whole thing is that on paper she should be the ace pilot of the group, but her personality problems, the differences between training and real experience, and her inability to connect with her Eva cripple her actual performance. The one time she was actually as good as she wanted to be was when she got over herself and managed to bond with her Eva, which only happened at the very end.

UC is an over the top Gundam series and the characters from NGE (no matter if it's the show, manga, movies, etc ) are also over the top, which makes approximating them together much easier then the AC univers.

Could Asuka, make it and survive in the After Colony univers? Absolutely. All off the Eva characters probably could and they may even be better off for it. But the show would suffer horribly because Asuka's loud, bombastic, and annoying tsundere archetype simply doesn't fit the tone of GW. She and any other Eva character (except maybe Misato, Kaji, and maybe Ritsuko) would be a paraya to this show and not a benefit to the plot in anyway.

You're right in that she could make the biggest turnaround of all her companions - in fact, she does. For a little bit right at the end she manages to let go of some of her hangups, communicate with her Eva, and become a much better person and better pilot than she was before. It's only a first step, but it shows that Asuka was capable of change, and by extension that all people were capable of change, that destroying them all with Instrumentality wasn't the answer.

Changing Asuka's circumstances wouldn't magically fix her. The only thing that can fix Asuka is herself. Or a therapist, but it's not like the AC setting has any of those around either.

And personally, those two versions of Asuka are pretty much indistinguishable from any other tsundere in any other harim shit anime.
