As someone who only recently started watching Kamen Rider I thought ghost was decent because Sentai has been going downhill Kyu is good so far, but by the end of Ghost I am willing to say it was shit. Costume design was on point, Fights at some points were great, and although I didn't care for the Eyecon concept, by the end of the series I'm willing to say it was a neat belt/eyecon thing.

But the story? Coming from someone who unironically enjoyed Toqger, was just bad. Straight up if Ghost didn't even show up, Alan and Specter could have came to terms with Alan's brother. They could have done absolutely nothing and the series could have resolved itself. I was really let down with just about every aspect of story writing in that series.

but seriously though, the costumes were fucking perfect for someone with my tastes.

The issue with Ghost is actually that they didn't really change the writing staff - those 6 episodes by the main writer were 2 movie tie ins (the episodes where Makoto starts randomly complaining about his father) and then the final 4 episodes.

Considering how little he was writing, they should just have replaced him for those last 20 episodes too, rather than this half assed measure that ended up resulting in the show slowing down to a crawl while secondary writers weren't allowed the advance the plot much and then suddenly rushing to a conclusion when the main writer returned for the ending.

In a single episode, you get Kenzaki suddenly being surprised about his salary being cut, when previously everyone talked like Board just didn't exist anymore and there were comments about him lacking money, the introduction of mysterious new Undeads (Artificial undeads) and Tachibana seemingly working with some new suspicious person. Okay so what I'm getting from Ex-Aid and Emu's character so far is that "M" is definitely a manifestation of his Bugster infection, which developed as the infection Dan Kuroto induced grew over the ten years.

BUT I don't think that the polite "Emu" personality that he switched too after the surgery six years ago that led to Zero Day, is really his "original" personality. I think having such a long, prolonged infection changed what was left behind when that massive viral load was relieved.

Really, Emu and M are defined in context with each other. Emu without M was hesitant and clumsy. M is tactless and aggressive. They work best when they work together as Mighty Bros. XX.

I realised this episode that Emu/M as a character has actually developed quite well. He's definitely matured with Burgermon and him breaking out as a Bugster as a character. Along with Hiiro, too. He used to be a lot more hot-headed and "I WILL SAVE THE PATIENT!"
Now he's "I will avenge the lives all those who have suffered at your hands" and the scene where Dan cries at him in CR and Emu tells Asuna to be quiet, and just sits there almost stone-faced listening to Dan's story. Then he gets red-eyed with the Bugster-side nearly breaking out, but he suppresses it without too much problem.
He's still zealous in trying to save his patients, but he's a lot more level-headed now. In control. I guess you don't really know how to be in control unless you've lost control.

It's not too subtle, but I'm really enjoying all the characters' development so far, it's rather well done.

Some of you seem a little confused as to why Dan fucked Emu up.

Imagine you're young and talented, and everyone thinks of you as a boy genius because you developed all these best sellers by the time you were just entering highschool. The world is your oyster, kiddo. You have the best job ever lined up, you feel like a fucking god every day and get to bring joy to a bunch of people who admire your work.

Then you get an extensive fan letter from a 10-year old that improves on your design in every fucking way, making what you know is your best look like child's play. You realize you were not the big fish you always thought you were, that this kid is even more amazing than you'll ever be and that he might get even better as time goes by. Your pride took the biggest hit it possibly could. Until you opened that letter you thought you were some kind of god and now you feel surpassed in every fucking way by someone who isn't even a middleschooler yet.

Shit's fucked. You go berserk. You fuck the kid up, you get your dad sent away to prison and keep working hard to make the ultimate game that will surpass all videogames ever made, the one game everyone on the planet will have to participate in whether they want it or not. And the guy that dented your perfect armor of self-confidence gets to be a beta tester, because it is and always will be fucking personal to you.

Basically, the tismo, impostor syndrome and a relentless desire to prove oneself drive Dan to this unprecedented amount of megalomania. This is a kid that never got to grow up and still wants to be the very best, and that's the only reason why Emu is alive. He wants Emu to see that he is the true genius out of the two of them. It's all for the sake of one-upping the person that made him feel like he was not perfect for the thing he feels he does best in life.

The more I think about it, there's a lot of Venture Bros in this show. Everyone is coping with massive personal failures/hangups.

Ex-Aid seems to be running with a theme of free will, in that how much of your personality and identity is pre-determined by other things. Dan Kuroto is an insane, jealous, petty bastard, and always has been. That's his integral character. He's not going to change.

But the other Riders, we've seen them change either in the events of the show, or in their backstory (Taiga).

You're right about epigenetics dealing with how transcription of certain genes is promoted or suppressed, but the reason why HIV is almost impossible to cure is because the virus itself mutates too fast. The only effective antiretroviral drugs for it also affect the cell's own natural machinery for transcription and translation to a degree, which is why those drugs have such a laundry list of shitty side effects.
