Those last two episode are going to be disapointing. I don't even look forward to the battle. I don't know, it just doesn't feel climactic. The MCs are just trying to run away to do paperwork, how anti epic is that? I know it's not Okada's goal when she writes this but still I wish she made an effort. In light of Mcgillis' recent actions I've seen a dip in opinion about the Chocoman himself, however I think many people have overlooked the circumstances leading up to his ill conceived plans regarding Bael.

First off, lets remind ourselves what is Mcgillis' goal? To "reform the corrupt Gjallarhorn"(S1E18) and create a world where people could "compete fairly...regardless of background"(S2E9). And how can he accomplish that? By being in a position with more power, by becoming "more powerful than Rustal Elion"(S2E4) Gjallarhorn's true top dog.

So how did it all go wrong? What compelled him to believe that all would simply "bow to Bael"(S2E19) just because it was piloted by Gjallarhorn's founder? Honestly, I don't think he ever did, not truly. I believe the other Seven Stars would have bowed had Mcgillis the appropriate force to back him up, but with only the Outer Earth Orbit Regulatory and Revolutionary Fleet Mcgillis didn't have the means to sway the other Seven Stars.

That being said Gundam Bael was undoubtedly Mcgillis' endgame all along ever since he was a child in fact, as we see when Rustal Elion reminisces his first meeting with the young Mcgillis, kindly asking the child if there was anything he wanted to which he responded "Bael"(S2E8). Whilst Mcgillis read the book "The Life of Agnika Kaieru" during his childhood he became aware of how Agnika and Bael were "deified"(1/144 Bael manual) for their deeds during the Calamity War saw it as a way of making his way to the top.

Even so he is aware that piloting Bael won't be enough to make him the King of Gjallarhorn because such a mindset was from an era when Gjallarhorn "needed a strong man to fight the mobile armours"(S2E19). In the current era of the P.D. universe, from the perspective of the current Seven Stars Gundam Bael is a symbol of power and authority and little else. It only holds the power to truly sway the pitiable "young officers"(S2E20).

Again, let me reiterate that Mcgillis is aware of all of this. Which is why he was slowly inching his way towards more power. From season 1 Mcgillis exposed the corruption of the Gjallarhorn Mars Branch and had the chief there replaced by one of his own, putting that sect under his own influence. He also ensured the election would vote in Makanai's favour, which exposed Izanario's blatant interference with Arbrau's internal affairs forcing Izanario to be exiled and allowing Mcgillis to usurp his adoptive father's position. Mcgillis also coaxed Izanario into permitting Carta Issue to pursue and face off against Tekkadan knowing full well that Tekkadan would kill her, and in her absence and with his position as the new Lord Fareed swoops in to take House Issue's leaderless Outer Earth Orbit Regulatory and Revolutionary fleet under his wing. And lastly, the biggest move that came back to bite him, killing poor Gali Gali which would've made him inherit House Bauduin when Lord Gallus Bauduin steps down thanks to his engagement with Almiria. Due to all of this, by the time Season 2 begins Mcgillis has acquired the power of three of the Seven Stars, Fareed, Bauduin, and Issue.

But this still isn't enough to topple the might of the Arianrhod Fleet. So what does Mcgillis do? Expand his power, which he tries to do at the start of season 2 by attempting to gain approval from the other Seven Stars to "trampl[e] on the area of Lord Elion"(S2E1) as the Great and Mighty Lord Kujan so eloquently put it. Noticing Mcgillis' intentions Rustal Elion responds saying that "power" is needed "to maintain peace and order"(S2E1). Actual TANGIBLE power is necessary, which is something Mcgillis has been working to accumulate, something that Rustal throws in Mcgillis' face.

A symbol of power is purely a supplement to physical power. Which is why Mcgillis was fairly surprised when the Great and Mighty Lord Kujan accuses Mcgillis of trying to "snatch the top rank"(S2E10) within the Seven Stars by acquiring an "Order of Seven Stars". Whilst moving up the Seven Star rankings may feel good and owning an Order has a nice ring to it, at the end of the day the ranking are just a symbol, just for show and this is most evident with House Issue. Throughout season 2 the swanky Seven Star conference room has been featured a number of times. At the head of the table you'll notice is House Issue's Banner whilst at the back you have House Kujan and House Fareed. Though the show never stated this, it's clear from the seating positions that House Issue is ranked No.1 whilst House Fareed and Kujan rank last. House Issue has been stated by outsiders as "the most powerful of the Seven Stars"(S1E21) but how true is that? Despite supposedly being at the top House Issue merely commands the Outer Earth Orbit Regulatory and Revolutionary Fleet, which was considered by Rustal Elion as "just around for show"(S1E19) when it was under House Issues command.

When looking at House Elion's symbolic position, they are ranked in the middle alongside House Bauduin. Yet when we look at the balance of power we get a very different picture. House Elion possesses a "unique kind of position"(S2E21) within Gjallarhorn as the commander of the largest military force within Gjallarhorn, the Arianrhod Fleet comprising of House Elion and Kujan. To be able to even challenge this power would require the joined forces of "all the [other] families"(S2E21) which Mcgillis has been slowly and successfully working towards.

So how did it all go wrong? What caused the dip in the audience's opinion of Mcgillis? Gaelio Bauduin, or rather he is the catalyst of Mcgillis' recent and heavily criticised behaviour.

During the mobile armour incident Mcgillis became aware of Gaelio's survival due to some not so vague remarks concerning Mcgillis' other childhood friend. To Mcgillis' horror he realises that all this time where he was playing politics with Rustal and the Great and Mighty Lord Kujan, Rustal Elion "has [him] by the neck"(S2E14) and could expose him and have him "stripped entirely of [his] position in Gjallarhorn"(S2E21). While the audience during season 2 episode 12 may have felt Gaelio's behaviour was a cop out of an early Charbowl, his actions are very intentional here. Gaelio's confrontation with Mcgillis on Mars pressured Mcgillis into hastening his plans and putting into action prematurely. This in turn allows Gaelio to "pin down [Mcgillis'] real intentions"(S2E14) before figuring out his own "destiny"(S2E18). Triggering a premature deathmatch between the two Char clones would've prevented Gaelio from understanding Mcgillis' actions hence the restraint. In regards to Rustal Elion, he refrains from exposing Mcgillis' misdeeds out of respect for Gaelio's quest as well as due to his own curiosity for what Mcgillis is "trying to accomplish in Gjallarhorn".

Gaelio and Rustal both achieve their goals when Mcgillis launches his coup which many audience members have claimed to be ill conceived, and rightly so because it is VERY ill conceived. But this is only due to Mcgillis realising that Rustal Elion has driven him into a corner LONG ago. Rustal Elion can accuse Mcgillis at any time causing Mcgillis to lose everything he has worked towards since he found his salvation "The Life of Agnika Kaieru", left just as powerless as when he was an orphan on the streets. As a result Mcgillis is left with two options. To continue at his current pace of acquiring more power but living in fear of not knowing when Rustal Elion would out him, or to launch a coup hastily before everyone turns against him. He chose the latter, starting a coup d'état low chances of success at best. Again let me remind you that Mcgillis had little say in this matter. Due to his childhood he despises being in a position without power, believing that "those without power crawled on the ground"(S2E18). Which is why being in a position a position where Rustal Elion can render him powerless at any time is completely out of the question for him so he meets the commander of the Arianrhod Fleet head on.

And now, in regards to Gundam Bael, just as Mcgillis has been criticised for his behaviour Bael has been criticised for being both underwhelming and just a symbol. Whilst I may have pointed out how very little symbolic power has done for the current members of the Seven Stars it would be wrong to write it off as pointless. During Mcgillis' coup he attempts to use Bael to sway the other Seven Stars over to his side which proves to be ineffective. Though it failed I'm certain this was Mcgillis' intention with Bael from the very beginning but due to Gaelio's return he was forced to play this card much earlier than intended.

It baffles me utterly how McGillis comes across as having thought none of this through.

His ineptitude is astonishing.

Now, this is a bit of conjecture on my part but I believe Mcgillis would have sat in Bael AFTER he had attained the power of the other families save Elion and Kujan. As I had mentioned earlier Symbolic power is only a supplement. Once Mcgillis was at the height of his power, able to just overpower Rustal Elion, he would have sat in Bael and forced Rustal Elion and the Great and Mighty Lord Kujan to bow bloodlessly. Again, this is even more conjecture on my part but Mcgillis never elaborated on why Tekkadan's discovery of the mobile armour was considered an "unexpected twist in fortune"(S2E10) except that it "makes the winds of time flow again"(S2E10). Seeing as Mcgillis had intended to pilot Bael from the beginning, perhaps he plotted to unleash the mobile armour on Earth have it wreak havoc with no one able to stop it save one individual, Mcgillis as the pilot of Bael swoops in to defeats the mobile armour Hashmal and reinforces the symbol of Gundam Bael being a messiah machine and he himself being the rightful leader of Gjallarhorn.

Though Bael failed to fully sway the Seven Stars to Mcgillis, it was enough to prevent Lord Baklazan and Lord Falk from directly oppose him in spite of the serious allegations against Mcgillis for killing a member of the Seven Stars and trying to kill another. In fact Lord Baklazan cleverly uses Bael's symbolic power to his advantage to claim neutrality. Should Mcgillis win he can claim that in spite of Mcgillis' crimes he didn't oppose Bael's pilot by siding with Rustal Elion. And if Rustal wins and questions Lord Baklazan as to why he didn't support him, Lord Baklazan can claim that he "cannot defy"(S2E21) Bael's symbolic power as it would be "denying the existence of Gjallarhorn"(S2E21).

All in all I feel like the audience has been a little too caught up in Mcgillis' recent failures due affecting Tekkadan whilst ignoring build up that forced these failures. As Mcgillis notes "the greatest symbol of power in the world. Authority, might, vigor, capability, vitality, influence, and brute force"(S2E21). Mcgillis' original plans certainly accounted for all these values however he has been forced to rush into action putting a premature plan into action to which Gaelio notes only contains "authority"(seizing Gundam Bael, the symbol of Gjallarhorn), "might"(amassing a force that, while weaker than the Arianrhod Fleet, was still noteworthy), and "brute force"(starting a coup and attempting to face the Arianrhod Fleet head on).

But that's the thing. The only support he built up was his own fleet, a bunch of naive rookies and a band of kid mercenaries. Meanwhile Rustal has a bigger fleet than all of his support combined, and there's three more families on earth, one of which is vastly anti-choco and two of which are playing neutral.

He should've known the previous battle was his one and only chance to get rid of Rustal because killing him wasn't the goal. The goal was to convince the families on earth he should be the one to back.

With how Rustal utterly wiped out the chocolate space rat alliance, he'd obviously get full backing of the other families. Choco doesn't have the manpower anymore to take on the rest of Gjallahorn and at this point killing Rustal in a pinpoint strike will serve no purpose. The other families would just take over and continue hunting him.

Choco not only severely overestimated how much backing Bael would gain him, he was an idiot for thinking Tekkadan would be enough to take care of Rustal and for thinking he'd still have a chance after losing the last battle.
