Unlikable protagonists (especially Mikazuki), extremely slow pacing, very few fight scenes, the worst animation quality in the franchise, horrendous storyboarding/editing, and foreshadowing varies between cliche or so subtle you won't catch it.

I think the thing is that when dealing with IBO's story, bullet-points aren't enough. I feel that unless you go into detail, it's too easy for proponents of the show to ignore what is said because IBO appears fine on a surface level. Like, we could just write unlikable protagonists and leave it at that. Easy enough for them to dismiss.

Here's my take: IBO's story is reliant on the viewer sympathizing with the protagonists. However the show portrays Tekkadan in a very romanticized light, negative qualities are downplayed while there are whole scenes intended to making the audience feel for them. As a result, the show's narrative tends to portray them as the victim, complete with evil adult in each case for the audience to focus their hate upon, even when their setbacks are the results of their own actions.This might end up getting on some people's nerves, especially as things tend to go Tekkadan's way during the first season to the point of removing a lot of the tension.

However, if the audience does sympathize with Tekkadan the story itself can be rather off-putting. It's a classic rise-and-fall story, so when Tekkadan starts going into ruin the show may invoke a negative reaction from people who wanted them to have a happy ending. I know people in season 2 who start screaming hack job whenever something bad happens to Tekkadan or their allies. As such, there is some debate over whether season 2 is an improvement or another victim of the curse.

If you're going to discuss the politics of the show, be prepared to explain why they're weak in great detail. Probably with lots of links.

Some of the character development is very subtle, to the point it's easy to mistake it as non-existent.

A lot of them do. Kannazuki, Simoun, Mai-HiME, Kiddy Grade are all flagship yuri stuff from back in the day. Iczer One is like their grandma.
Nanoha, Symphogear, Vividred, Strike Witches, Pandora are all part of this modern wave of techno-magical girl shows with yuri subtext up the ass.
Godannar, Strain, Horizon, Mouretsu Pirates, Cross Ange all have lesbians but not as the main characters.
Cutie Honey is sometimes really gay, other times not so much.
Steel Angel Kurumi 2 is an actual yuri harem, but it's really poor.
Dinagiga is like a crappier, gayer Gunbuster.
