i can't believe people think it's going to be the gundam lighting the torch when it's really going to be the YAMATO
How the fuck is a battleship gonna light a torch?

>>15300311
the collective SE asia would have an aneurysm if Yamato light the torch.
>>15300634
Not to mention the USA
>>15300697
We never technically "fought" it. It was at Midway, but as a command ship for Isoroku to direct the attack. The ship only once in its history fired its guns upon a surface target. Then by the end of the war we destroyed it with planes.
Wierd thing is I could've sworn the ship was scuttled to prevent capture, but apparently not.
>>15300705
It was sent on a suicide mission with no escort because muh bushido code

> "Space" Battleship
> No guns on the bottom
Boy it's a good thing the Gamillans are morons that can't exploit obvious design flaws.
>>15300697
culturally, USA isn't butthurt about WW2 Japan, since we were the winners and winners are magnanimous in victory.
>>15300705
Also the US Navy didn't even know that the thing existed. The IJN was so secretive about the Yamato class that it was noticed only when a spotter plane was able to take a pic of it relatively late in the war. Said picture originated a lot of debate about the spec of the ship because it wasn't considered realistic for the japanese to build a ship like that. On retrospective the japanese approach was patently stupid and totally negated the fleet in being doctrine. If the US were aware of the ship a good deal of naval power would have been sent to destroy it or at least keep it in check, meaning that it wouldn't have been avaible for other operations.
>>15300714
Actually it had an escort of a cruiser and eight destroyers which was reasonable considering the late war situation. However they were useless against the US total air superiority.
>>15300725
Well, the ones who got captured and tortured by the Japanese were.
>>15300714
It did have an escort, but even the destroyers like Akizuki bristling with AA couldn't do much against overwhelming air power at that point.

In reality, US, and other countries, intelligence departments knew that something like the Yamato existed, but they didn't know any more specifics aspects about it, being left with wild guesses and supositions until the aerial photo that you mentioned, in 1944.

>>15300768
They really don't need the Yamato lighting the torch just for that.
>>15300857
The intelligence was aware of an oversized japanese ship, but they believed to be a sort of "super cruiser" instead of a battleship. That's because it fit with Japan's industrial capabilities, the variety of new cruiser types encountered and the carrier focus of the IJN. I can't really blame them, a super BB built by an industrial underdog with carrier focus is really a dumb idea.
>>15300697
What? We conquered the Yamamoto. It's almost a shame she didn't get to survive the war and get turned into some Tomahawk-chucking monstrosity with an integrated fleet of helicopters and drones.
>>15300311
Why can't it be both?
