As anon above says, it's not the most tragic/fucked up Yoko Taro game to date. In /m/ terms, I'd say it's much bleaker than Zeta Gundam, but lighter than Bokurano. A 7/10 if you ask me.

Please don't play Automata without playing NieR. While this is the full Yoko suffering train, the callbacks make this even better. The machines have their cute moments just like The Shades.

Most people would say Zeta is bleak. A lot of named characters die (many in gruesome ways) and the protagonist is a PTSD'd vegetable at the end of the series. I'd say it's a 6/10 on the bleakness scale and a 4/10 on the sadness scale, because presentation also matters and Zeta never made me truly sad, where the Bokurano manga would be a 10/10 on the bleakness scale and an 8.5/10 on the sadness scale (the presentation again making up for/being the cause of the difference). Similarly, Automata's world is a lot bleaker than its story is sad (9/10 vs. *7/10) due to the way the narrative is treated.

*I'd actually revise this to 8/10 now that I've played more and got a couple of the endings. Anyway, this is entirely subjective since we're literally talking about emotions.
