Who would win?

Shmup ships are always insanely overpowered from a pragmatic point of view but then again so are VFs

Much as I like Gradius, Macross tech is pretty nuts.

The VF 25, back in Frontier, had a battle computer able to target and engage up to 1024 separate targets simultaneously, its only limit being that it didn't have enough guns to shoot at all of them at the same time.

Even in shmup terms, that's pretty impressive. Even Shmup games never have that many enemies onscreen at the same time. And Delta takes place a whole generation of planes later...

To be fair, the Vic Viper has 4 Options that are basically funnels that mimic the whatever weapons the VV has on it.

Sure, but assuming they act like they do in the game the Options are kinda dumb. Powerful guns, but sort of stupid in terms of their reaction time and individual control.

Compare that to a Ghost, which has a bleeding edge reaction time due to its onboard AI, flies at speeds that would kill a human and has is designed to laser targets out of the sky with aimbot precision. Ghosts give ace pilots a run for their money everything time they show up, and because its Macross they are shown to evade or shoot down dozens of missiles at a time.

I would trust one Ghost to destroy 4 Options in a fight every time. The Options have great offense, but no defense.

Only as a game mechanic. By that same logic, the Vic Viper is incapable of turning and can only face in one direction and fly straight ahead.
