I watched the Early Days OVA this week, wish I saw it sooner.
>catchy OP
>enjoyable characters
>satire of mecha anime mixed with a drama-comedy
That multi-part finale was great, can't wait to watch the movie.
What do you like about the series, /m/?
>>
>>15277139
you watched a different anime because Patlabor was pretty horrible.
>>
Patlabor is wonderful.

Just a really chill show that can span any genre that it feels like (even goes to horror at some points). But I also feel like the characters are the spotlight aspect; it mainly feels like you're there to hang out with Noa and the gang.

It isn't the anime that tries to be super impressive. It's just a very quality and humble show.

>Patlabor is wonderful.
it really isn't
>>
>>15277141
>>15277225
What didn't you like about it? Just disagreeing with the people who liked it doesn't explain how it's bad.
>>
>>15277262

Don't respond to the shitposter, you naive twit.
>>
>>15277262
Pacing, music, animation, Ohta, lack of action, and writing problems
>>
>>15277262
Just ignore it.
>>
>>15277139

The movies are completely different except maybe the 1st movie.
2md is Oshi Oshiing it up talking about hyperreality.
3rd is a mystery thriller set in the same universe with different characters(which I liked a lot)
>>
>>15277139
Cool, a Patlabor thread. I just finished watching all the movies.
I think the strong character focus in the OVAs allows Oshii to dwell more on his ideological musings for the films because the cast is already so established.
Is the TV show more like the OVA in tone?
>>
>>15278200

TV is super lighthearted comfy hijinks SOL and the TV OVA look fantastic.
You get stuff like pic related.
>>
>>15278215
That's pretty great, I really enjoyed the movies but I need a change of tone.
I wish I had a better introduction to the franchise than that one Manga Entertainment highlight reel years ago, I wonder how many kids watched that and were really confused with the 2nd film.
>>
>>15277139
I like that one episode where the maintenance crew starts an underground porn black market and splits off into lots of little factions

Just watched the OVA. The music was especially good.
>>
>>15278323
Which episode is this
>>
>>15278323
The maintenance crew are one of the things I really like about the show. You've got the main cast, but you also get a peek at the antics of the army of people that supports them.
>>
>>15278913
It's in the 2nd ova, one of the later eps iirc.
>>
>>15278936
I'm about half way through the TV show, so it'll be awhile. I won't rush though, I don't want this to end. It's just too good.
>>
>>15278323
I watched that one recently, it was amazing.
And an earlier episode of the same OVA somehow managed to make a really engaging plot about Noa having a fucking toothache.
This show is a treasure.

Where does track-15 "INTERFACE" come up in the series? I vaguely remember hearing it in the movies.

The soundtrack is really great.

SHUDDUP!
>>
Does anybody know which album contains the soundtrack from episode 6 of the original OVA?

2nd album ends with tracks from the 5th episode, and the 7th episode tracks were released on the 4th album which is the live action series due to it being made after the main 6 OVA episodes. 3rd album is the movie.

I swear I can't find some of the tracks on either of the two that are uploaded.
>>
>>15280046
I tried looking but couldn't find anything.

Have you got a copy of the 20th anniversary music set? I may have missed a few track when searching.
>>
>>15280761
Disc two maybe?

I think disc one is just TV + second OVA and disc three is movies. I will definitely check. All I've looked under are the original release albums.

This? This is the song during the helicopter/stolen labor chase.
>>
Wow just watched the second ova's first episode, and it's hitting a lot of bad marks.

>budget animated filler minutes have some filthy unshaded QUALITY
>flatter, simplified character design (ohta got a helluva tan for some reason)
>annoying child character
>super edgy ninja robot (ill admit this wasn't as worn thin in 1990 as it is in current year, but disarming two opponents, one by literally shooting the gun out of its opponents hand, undamaged otherwise. Like wtf, a 20mm round doesn't do noticeable damage to the cannon or the robot holding it.)

I plan on finishing this, but this OVA feels more in line with a TV release. OVA1's more involved direction and seemingly better budget put it above OVA2 for me so far.

>>

Man, Shinji looks adorable in that pic.
>>
>>15282024
Oh, that's definitely from episode 6. In specific, I'm thinking about the track that plays during Shinobu's insubordination. I can't find it from what's uploaded.
>>
>>15282210
Are you retarded or what is exactly is going on here?

The New Files OVA is a sequel to the TV show and more or less similar quality. It ties up one of the main recurring plots and has some sequels to premises from the TV show.

It has nothing to do with the original OVA or movies and the TV is required viewing for the New Files OVA
>>
>>15282351
Kind of retarded i guess. The copy i have is a nice size but raw with no subs. I managed to get subs for OVA1, and OVA2 just happens to start playing after 1 was finished.

I'm loathing finding subs for TV and OVA2, but i'm really drawn to less regimented pacing and generous animation budgets of OVA's and movies. Not that i can't enjoy a tv anime, but I guess it wasn't entirely clear how Patlabor's continuties worked, or even that they existed. Animes aren't as strictly canonical or value their continuity as obsessively as similar western media such as comics. I kind of just expected to be able to say, jump into the next OVA, and the change was a little jarring. Kind of like finishing zeta, rolling into ZZ and questioning what the fuck is going on.
>>
>>15282383
>Animes aren't as strictly canonical or value their continuity as obsessively as similar western media such as comics.
This is a bad meme.

Japanese totally are aware of continuity and observe it or explain it. What they won't do is try to neatly pack everything into one continuity called canon and then fight everyone over what fits in or not.
>>
>>15282398

Yes, that i what i mean. They are away of continuity, they can execute continuity, they just don't obsess over it like we do. They don't seem strict about it.

>Macross/DYRL
>Zeta/ANT
>Model Suit Gunpla Builders Beginning G/Build Fighters

Ok so maybe i should have said that Anime in general isn't as dogmatic to canon as western media?
>>
>>15282462
DYRL is explained as fictional within the universe IIRC. Gundam is considered a historical record with different accounts of history. Even then it's generally considered that Zeta TV is in in continuity with ZZ and CCA at least.

It's never explained but it's implied Beginning G is just another show inside Build Fighters as we see the units from Beginning G as Bandai kits in Build Fighters, whereas the Build Fighter main gunpla are considered custom builds.
>>
>>15282210
You're fucking retarded if you're leaping into OVA2 without watching TV.

We got subs for the surprisingly good reboot short, though.
