That's not true at all. The only time he "ignores" Nine is in the beginning before he realizes that the weird girl who keeps talking to him has actually been his mech's OS all along. Once that's revealed he makes a big deal out of apologizing to her to for the stuff he said and tells her that they're partners.

The thing is the other characters act like if he's not fawning over her 24/7 like Chitose does than that means they don't get along. But most of the moments between Souji and Nine happen away from the rest of the cast because Souji doesn't open up around other people. It's not like Nine is devoid of her moments of snark either.

And he takes his job seriously as fuck. All his inner-monologues are about how he wants to keep everyone safe and together and how people shouldn't throw their lives away because he's still caught up on his old squadron dying. He's trying to act happy for their sake instead of getting caught up in the same funk "of everything's fucked and we're screwed forever" that 95% of the cast is in for most of the game.

He's awkward around people because a lot of his personality is forced so he shoots himself in the foot a lot during social interactions. But I think that actually adds variety to him rather than some flawless OG that everyone trips overs all the time.

I wonder if we got Souji while he was still stoic and serious before his squad died if people would have complained about him being too boring instead.
