If you only take the original Desler was nothing more than a pompous asshole. I mean, he is still an amazing villain but he is never portrayed in a grey light.

They change the beginning of the war to make Earth fire the first shot... but then they made Dessler into an outright villain, rather than someone fighting for the survival of his people due to some of the other plot changes.

They also tie some episodic stuff from the original into larger arcs which is nice, although other encounters are just cut. Many of the early battles remain the same though.

Part of it was indirect, due to eliminating the plot about people from Earth and Gamilas being unable to breath under each others' atmosphere and Gamilas' iminent destruction, Desler automatically has less justification for his actions. It's why the Gamilas army in the original had to render Earth uninhabitable to humans. They likely did that since it lines up better with the sequels, where the incompatible air thing was completely dropped.

However, part of it were straightforward changes - the whole last conflict is changed with Dessler being banished after the disastrous battle where Gamilas is left in ruins (just the capital in 2199), rather than the surviving Gamilas lining up being him for a final battle.

Also, although the supporting cast is generally stronger and more varied in the remake, they did away with all of Kodai's character progression (in the original he was pretty much a rebel initially, often disagreeing with orders and such, even if ultimately following them - and he slowly develops into understanding the captain, rather than being the good soldier from the start)

they got rid of the bug people and Analyzer does a lot less anal-izing.

Aside from the new batch of female side characters, some new male side characters, and one or two characters that got gender swapped, there are also other changes to the story. Is kind of dificult to remember all of them, becuase there is also many minor stuff, and many are also spoilers. But some of them are:

- Kodai brother motivation to make his suicide run in the very first episode changes slightly; from simply dont wanting to retreat because of "muh praido" now he gives the excuse that he will stay behind to buy time to Captain Okita to get back to earth.

- In the first episodes of the original series, the Gamillians, mainly the personnel from the Pluto base, are represented with human skin tones because of a production error, which is later corrected. Now, the personnel of the Pluto base are members of a human-like race subbordinate of the Gamillians.

- Many of the episodes of the original series follow a "Threat of the week" formula. In the new series many of those threats and wacky plans give space to more conventional space battles.Also, many of the situations that are resolved by Kodai in the original, because he was the protagonist, are now resolved by other characters.

- In the original series the Gamillians planet is doomed, for unknown and never explained reasons, and Lord Desler, main villain, objective with the war on earth is to save his race, surviving by migrating to our planet. In the new series Gamillian home planet is not doomed, they dont need and dont want to move to earth, even more because they are a galaxy empire spanning various habitable planets. Earth is just another world in the Gammilians expasionist path. Desler motives also change to more personal reasons.

Considering this is a Fukui story we're almost guaranteed to have a gripping story for the first two thirds followed by a disappointing conclusion.

Then will be on spot with the tradition: the ending of the movie is a glorified suicide run wrapped in a sweet coating and jingoism, that goes totally against the message of the first series, and the second series is resolved with the greatest last minute asspull of anime history.

They are not going for the movie ending. They already put in a lot of character from the other installment of the series, in particular Yamazaki which in the original saga is introduced as the new chief engineer after season 2. Also the Aquarian precursor civilization is fleshed out a lot, so there is room for a third season or movie similar to Final Yamto.

The remake also implies that Earth is so backwater that Gamilas wouldn't have bother conquering it if not for the attack of the Cosmo Navy. That explains why they sent a small contingent of second class citizens and automatons to bomb Earth from distance instead of a full invasion force.

Maybe you should know that after Season 2 the fans of the original male Yamamoto rampaged so hard that in every successive retelling (in particular in all the videogames PS2 era included) his death was erased. They will probably erase Kato's death as well instead of replacing him with his twin brother with the same VA.

If I not mistaken, in the PS2 game his death is not erased, it can still happen, but it can also be averted. It is incredible how a character with less than ten lines in the two series he has appeared was so popular between the fans, principally between the girls. Adding to that, Yamato finally made its debut in SRW, so if Akira's canon death still happens, that'll give the SRW staff enough incentive to allow the fans to save her, and thus attract fans in droves to buy copies.

I'd say all of those changes save the last are good, or at least not bad. I think the main problem is not the incorporation of female military characters, which could be seen to be unrealistic when the original was made but not so much now, but rather the incorporation of moe with these characters. I have seen it pointed out that the original contained fan service, and don't doubt this, but the way moe and fan service is now compared to then at least for me is off-putting. Maybe I'm jelly because I don't have a body pillow, who knows.

In the first season of the TV show, while exploring a Gamilan base, a tentacle based defense system ensnares Sanada's arms and legs immobilizing him. He then shares a story with Kodai about how as a child a roller coaster killed his sister. This left him with a life long hatred of science. Also it he lost his arms and legs in the accident. Also the bionic replacements are bombs.After revealing this he detaches his limbs to have them carry him home and then detonates his limbs destroying the base.
