Watching Blade and Ryuki currently (finished Neo Heisei outside of W and Ghost, will watch the former eventually). Goddamn, Blade fantastic (aside from Chalice's shit attitude). I wish Ryuki's choreography was nearly as good as the story. Also, does Leangle ever get less annoying? I'm only on the episode where the Eagle Undead reveals Chalice's promise (or at least, that's what it seems based on the preview).

Done with episode 36 of Kamen Rider Black. Shadow Moon is literally the best Rider that would be easy to redesign for the modern age. He has the whole knight in shining armor aesthetic that flows throughout the suit. They used the wrong sword but they can always change it to a european longsword if they want to. His spikes are also distinctive as his metallic sounding walk.

The problem with the Shadowmoon suit is that Toei doesn't go with full armored looks for Tokusatsu heroes anymore.

His modern recreations always feel like the armor is about to fall apart and the pieces keep losing connection (especially the croth plate and legs/torso).

The original Shadowmoon suit seemed to use rubber like the monsters, with the pieces stretching with the actor's movement, but I guess they don't want to do that anymore since it makes the armor lose the metallic effect very easily in some scenes.

Sometime later i saw Ryuki and Fourze back to back. It was a good experience.

Kiva still had civilians being constantly killed on screen, in spite of also having scenes with Den-O-like humor. And there was Decade following them which could be early Heisei dark at times, although the atmosphere was overall very inconsistent.

Besides, it's not just the shows being darker, there's also all the extra movies with the Movie Wars and Den-O spring movies that soon became spring movies for the current Rider, Shirakura and Inoue moving away from the tv series, the collectibles in the marketing. The more structured toyline too with fixed position for Rider and form debuts (although both Gaim and Ex-Aid also break away from that in addition to their darker tones). There are many changes at that point even if some of them can trace their roots to Den-O.

He was already infected and going to die from it, with the Driver slowing the infection enough that his body was able to adapt to it to an extent. Then he got cornered by Ryoma and had no choice but to take a gamble on the fruit, since he was going to die there anyway.

Even after he became Lord Baron he was probably going to die from the Helheim cancer after a while, though he might have survived if he had gotten the crystal coconut.

Love the concept of the Slowdown and all the setup in the show is pretty nice but it comes off too restricted to its theme. I get that in the end of the day these shows are made to sell toys, but damn Drive feels like the toy factor was pushed up to 11. Especially since all of the Tire Exchanges look like giant pieces of monochromatic plastic. A real shame since I fucking love the rest of his suit

The toys were forgivable, even if they were useless chunks of plastic, knockoff hot wheels. The problem with drive, lied in its fairly weak story. I think the main issue is that having robots as villains, rather than humans, clashes with the police theme, making most cases feel weaker than W's. The show mostly shines when it focuses on the main plot.

Aside from the designs themselves, Drive hardly sticked to its theme. Note how, toy-wise, nothing suggests it's a police series at all. It's all done on the tv/writing side.

I think you can overlook the lack of a connection between the Rider's theme and the cop angle if its played up to be a more traditional secret identity thing. Although for that to work, you really do need to stick to your guns and show the dichotomy between both professions. But it all comes off as cookie cutter. ___ Rider gets ___ Forms. Most of the tires' functions don't really have anything to do with the car theme anyway so its kinda pointless to even attach such a super specific gimmick to the character. I'm really surprised they didn't put more of an emphasis on races. Like he has to race against the Roidmudes during the slowdown to stop them from attacking civilians. I realize that shit would probably be a bitch and a half to film, but if you're not willing to put in the extra effort with your theme why bother with the theme at all?

I was recently re-watching some Ryuki, because the Brave short with Ouja made me miss those characters. It got me thinking, how did they do mirror world stuff? There are signs in the background that are backwards. Did they print backwards signs and hang them up, have the suit actors fight left handed and then reverse the film, or something else altogether?

Drive was an interesting show hoisted by Bandai's awful fucking toys, again. I didn't care because my boner for Kiriko was too strong.
