If your friend like retro science fiction then Getterrobo or 0079 are good picks.

If they prefer something with actual animation but are still cool with old stuff then SDF macross, The Big O and F91 are solid(ish) picks.

If they grew up on transformers maybe try out the Brave superrobot series?

Gundam Thunderbolt is also a good pick if your friends only watch newer stuff.
