I feel the same way. People talk so badly about ZZ and I found myself liking it even during the first half although I agree the second half is way better. I'm 40 episodes in and besides the constant flashbacks and Jesus Yamato asspull, I do like it. Oddly enough, I'm excited to see Seed Destiny because of how bad it is. I'm looking forward to getting pissed off.

Actually there's a little known detail that many ignore about SEED/Destiny
Kira actually hasn't fucked lacus as far as on-screen evidence goes, and this is implied through some subtle elements throughout both shows.
1.Lacus was an idol and because otaku rage is hell like none other they never showed her getting intimate with kira beyond "pure actions"
This is why their relationship seems really artificial in SEED.

2.Kira and Lacus slept in different beds on the island.
Some think that this is because Kira still may suffer emotional damage from his relationship with flay and so he can't get intimate with others anymore

Any complaints I had about 'forced teen drama' went out the window when I watched that scene. That scene was legitimate, heart wrenching drama, even though I knew Jesus was going to come back anyway.

It's a shame they couldn't match that in Destiny.

Yeah, I agree. That scene, and the scene that led to it. It was almost certainly because of the music, but that mid season fight between the two was the first time I actually had any investment in the characters. They'd both killed one another's friends, all hesitation went out the window, the gloves came off and the two went all out in the attempt to just fucking kill each other, and the resulting fight was (even with the cheaping out on animation) a brutal back and forth slugfest where they hacked off bits and pieces of each other every exchange. They actually achieved the pathos they were going for for once.
