I've worked quite a bit on game mechanics in the past, along with GUI/HUDs.
I've used the Unity engine (along with Photon for networking) for like 6-7 years now.
I've got some experience with computer graphics too (specifically I did a real time shader for mechas during a college research internship, pic related).
I can do 3D modelling/rigging/animation but I've not figured out the texturing workflow yet.

I remember it has some problems with git when you merge scenes because of the metadata, but with communication and having "private" test scenes that can be avoided.

Yea I remember the problems with git too, but IIRC the metadata wasn't important for building so we were able to put most of the problem files on the ignore list. Or at least we did something to stop it from ruining our day.

I think Unity will probably be best since it sounds like you have a lot of experience in it.

I put a basic architecture for the game, I think it can handle most of what the game had.
It's still a bit rough at the moment (for instance the menu doesn't allow you to reconnect if something went bad, and there is a problem with the graphical effects for the non-master client).

I think a good starting point would be having players with just a beam rifle but with the game loop done, as that will make us have something playable.
After that I think adding a few select units like the GM (because it has a melee weapon, a hitscan weapon and a projectile weapon) would allow us to code most of the stuff, which would then allow us to implement the other units faster.

My suggestion of units that would make up code most features is :

- GM : Has both a hitscan and a projectile weapon
- Gouf : Has a burst firing weapon and an attack inflicting an ailment
- Big Zam : Is an MA with an alt mode, has a beam special attack and has a spread fire weapon
- Gundam (Magnetic Coating) : Has a purge transformation and a ranged special attack
- Ball (Repair) : Has a repair weapon, a hovering movement type and a no-dash melee attack
- Zaku II (Commander) : Has 2 commander skills that affect everyone.

We don't need to have skills from the beginning, or have any difference in stats at first, but having a list of units can allow someone to start modelling.

(For those of you who don't know, a Chinese programmer actually tried to launch a private server. He worked at the company that ran SDGO China (and made copies of the server files). He got found out, and was threatened to be fired from his job if he continued with the private server launch since they thought a private SDGO server would take away players from the company's Chinese servers).

In UCGO's case, it wasn't so much that assets were leaked so much as it was that they collected whatever they could before the game went down. They had the last client provided before the game went down and quite a bit of network data captured. From there, most of it was reverse-engineered via analysis of the network data and sending it to the client using a dummy server till they could figure out how to make it tick.

If you don't have that sort of stuff archived before the servers went down, you'd have to spend even more time since you don't even have network data to use as a cheatsheet. That said, the game was old and the client was in dire need of an overhaul. Just let it die.

I never formally learnt C#, but I knew Java beforehand, which is virtually the same thing (only a few keywords and structures change).
I learnt Java with an online tutorial (it's this one but it's in French : https://openclassrooms.com/courses/apprenez-a-programmer-en-java)
I learned Unity from the site itself, some advice from a professional developer and trying to make games.

A few pointers to help you :
- Don't use the 2D Physics in Unity, it offers you a lot less control over your objects. 3D physics with a character moving only on one plane is a better option.
- Do most of the movement logic in FixedUpdate(), as it is called regularly, and use Time.fixedDeltaTime in those functions. Update() is called each graphical frame while FixedUpdate() is each tick of the physics engine.
- When starting out, use a CharacterController instead of a Rigidbody. The latter are harder to use most of the time.

It was a long time ago so I don't remember the details.

I had learnt C and C++ shortly before so a lot of concepts were already familiar to me.
I think I went through the tutorial in one or two weeks. If it is your first language you might need more time.
At that point I could write programs in Java that more or less worked, and I build upon that over time.
A lot of concepts make a lot more sense when you programmed for a while.

For Unity itself, having a good programming base is good, but not necessary. I've seen people in college (that were studying game development with Unity for 3-4 years) that ignored literally all the object oriented concepts and still made working games.
It was very inefficient though, and you can save yourself a lot of time and trouble by using even basic concepts like inheritance.

If you just want to throw together something in Unity for fun, you can probably start once you understand the concepts of variables, conditions, functions, loops and classes.
I recommend learning additional concepts like inheritance, arrays and polymorphism, as that will allow you to do more in a shorter amount of time, but you can learn those step by step as you get comfortable with programming.

Quick update, I'm working on weapons at the moment. (Hitscan weapons to be precise, which encompasses beam rifles and vulcans for instance).

I've been also designing a slightly different melee system that should provide more depth and be simpler to implement and use.

the admin of UCGO Private Server was only hosting the server because he played it while it was still running and enjoyed it back then. The only reason he keeps it up now is because super autists pay him and if it weren't for that he'd have washed his hands completely. Either way you'd need to have the server packets for SDGO and from all the threads we've had on this game since its death it's pretty clear nobody bothered to save them.

Right now I'm trying to make a functional 3-weapon Gundam. Not using Skills or Special attacks yet.
That should make for a nice base to build upon.

After that it will be a case of putting some specific units in to cover more weapon types, and then slowly rebuild the roster while programming the game loop and lobbies.
