The ova from the nineties is an example of a remake made very well. Toei took everything that worked in the original and improved on it.
The animation was excellent, the music also. The real downside to the ova is that it's over after 2 freaking episodes. Toei should have made many more but somehow chickened out.

The original series is your standard 1970s japanese super hero anime show. Formulaic to the extreme. Although it had good animation when polymar transforms and combats his enemies. The story is ok and it sure beats the classic single guy going against aliens invading tokyo trope.

also they have a great cost-saving routine where he beats the shit out of bad guys by hitting them (with the same animation) over and over in rapid succession, which combined with his screaming makes Polymar look mostly like a psycho killer and it's great

Eh, I'd say it was actually an anomaly among Tatsunoko superhero shows during the 70s. It didn't take itself seriously but it also wasn't a part of the Time Bokan series.
