Robotech itself is just a product of its time, there's nothing to apologize for. I'd even go so far as to say compared to other adaptations of the era like Voltron it does a considerably better job sticking to the source material.

Blame Harmony Gold for being jew faggots with the Macross license and trying to milk a dead and tarnished IP for all it's worth. For some reason they think Robotech has the name power of Voltron but it clearly doesn't, and most of the people who watched it in their youth have since moved on to Macross (and to a lesser extent, Mospeada) proper. Harmony Gold can eat a dick and the sooner they fuck off the better.

Anyone has the alternative OP? The one with "ten years later, super fortress Macross would rise!"

The only reason to watch Robotech is if you're back in the 1980s and it's literally your only option to watch any form of mech anime because DVDs and Blu Rays and the Internet don't exist yet.
