The Kanto earthquake arc at the beginning is amazing, I'd go as far as to say "Devilman-tier" in both pros and cons. The character interaction can be questionable but the sense of build-up is wonderful and it all shows great sense for visual storytelling. Like when the earthquake starts and the off-kilter paneling is gets across the violent tremors.

Basically even if you thought the OVAs were meh check out the Violence Jack manga. At its worst it's... pretty retarded and not in a fun way unless you're a big fan of guro. At its best it's indescribably badass and makes me feel like I'm in my early teens reading Devilman for the first time again.

It doesn't bother me at all. Guro is not my cup of tea but I'd rather have it be there because Nagai going all out with id-driven insanity also results in things I absolutely adore.

I worded it that way mainly to get it out of the way and say "yeah, this guro element you've heard Jack get shit on for time and time again is still there in the manga, mainly in the 80s seinen run, but even if that's not your thing there's still a lot to enjoy in this series"

Though it's also worth pointing out that it's not nearly as detailed as the OVAs given Nagai's art is far more stylized than that of the Itano OVAs.

For the record, I think Berserk is arguably sillier with the rape given the tonal contrast of "this is so awful" vs "drawing this is turning me on" is bigger and Jack feels more self-aware over its low-brow fetishistic elements. But it also gets far more leeway because anime fans decided it's Shakespearean or whatever.

I still like both though and think that the /v/ types who think Berserk is the best manga of all time would enjoy Jack if they gave it an honest try.

I think it's SEXUALIZED violence, mainly, that bothers people, but I also think there's a double standard since, as I've said, Berserk gets away with a fanservicey portrayal of rape because it's seen as "deep".

I think the problem is, the media that introduced everyone to Berserk, while cheaply animated, captured the core of what made the manga entertaining (the old TV anime not the movies). While the Itano OVAs, despite being genuinely cool at times and not nearly as bad as people say, didn't get Nagai quite as well. That's why I keep saying Imagawa should direct a Jack OVA - I think Imagawa gets Nagai better than Itano did in the 80s.

But yeah fuck it, screw my comments about "edginess", they were just a lame compromise to get the kidfenris-type crowd to try it.

I learned to appreciate his 2000s art more thanks to Shin Violence Jack. The shading style in that one is really nice and some panels or panel compositions were really dynamic.
