That's what a remake is. For their part they added enough to expand the first story arc in interesting ways. Season 2 should be quite different from Farewell and the original second series.

Space Battleship Yamato 2199 shits all over the original. It is an improvement on all levels over the original and those that say no are just fucking contrarians with too much free time on their hands.

My only complaint is how the Kodai brothers were treated. I didn't like that 2199 killed off Mamoru and I felt original Susumu was done better than 2199.

Rebuild was a messy, incoherent abomination built to sell toys.

The Yamato remake is the only anime I've managed to endure in the last five years, I guess. Sure, stupid fanservice, but it's simple, direct, well done, with a good soundtrack and the protagonist is merely a young 'un instead of a 9-years old child.

It's a plus that for the majority of the series I could fool myself that the co-protagonist could be the hardass Old Captain. We need more white-bearded protagonists.
