Are there any good western comics that focus on piloted robots, or at least have them play somehow vital part in the setting? I tried looking it up, but it feels like diving in a really murky water, and I can't even swim.

It shouls do, it was an inspiration for it. The artist did a series of them, on top of that he draws robots quite a bit, some being based on common /m/ stuff like patlabor and transformers.
