It's the only Gundam show that approaches Garzey's Wings' critical level of Tomino chaos. It feels like 50 episode show's worth of events compressed into half of that, and that's with the inherent hecticness of Tomino's directing.

Extremely poor pacing.
The animation and fight choreography is some of the best in the franchise though.
I also like the atmosphere which is a culmination of many perfect production decisions.
The story's pretty fucked though if you don't focus on constantly searching for details to put together.

I've only seen one or two instances of people saying the entire rest of the franchise is mediocre to bad. I've seen people who like it also enjoy 0079, 0080, Victory or G among others far more often. There are two unrelated novels by two different writers, neither of whom are Tomino. One sticks more to Tomino's setting notes while the other does weird shit like having the MLB actually be a virus that infects machinery, having the Turn A gate beams into enemy cockpits, etc.

Both novels apparently stretch the ∀'s abilities far beyond what's seen in the show, and almost no one in the english speaking forums has read either of these novels so you'll keep hearing that its rifle is as strong as a Colony Laser, that it can bring its pilot back to life, that the MLB reached all the way to Jupiter (but not low earth orbit or the moon, evidently), that it can teleport, that it can gate beams into your cockpit, that it never gets stuck in the water temple, that it got 50,000 on Double Dragon, that it can melt steel beams, that it knows the Colonel's secret blend of herbs and spices, it knows the nude code for the first Mortal Kombat, etc, etc, etc.

I don't, but then I never saw the show or looked at the manual. The manuals contradicting the animation, or just blowing them out of proportion doesn't make them not the cause of a lot of people's perceptions of the units capabilities though.
