oh wow, what a surprise
I love Killzones art direction
>>15223409
>I dunno about anything else other than that they also used that Battroids from Macross
They got a lot of shit.
Almost every single mech from Dougram, almost every single mech from Macross, the only mech from Crusher Joe.
Nabbed Scopedog and that machine used by the guerrilas for retracing.
Added quite a few absolutely stolen designs in lots of the expansions.
If there was a VHS sub for it and it was militaristic, you can bet your ass the mech in question appeared at some point in Battletech. Except for MSG but that's probably because it heavily references Star Wars and Star Was already ripped them a new one over trademarks. Didn't stop them from stealing the AT-ST or whatever is the chicken-walker called, though.
They're just designs in the end but it gets rather annoying once the ever-retarded fanbase starts trumpeting their age old and ignorant "Our hyper-realistic 1000 times folded American master race designs are superior to your dirty rice peasant scribbles on bamboo paper."
>>15223261

I take it you don't interact much with the playerbase online, then.
It comes out every single time anyone dares mention anime in their vicinity in any wasy shape or form.
It comes out when you even remotely suggest the mechs to actually move and not act as if they were concrete statues on legs.
It comes out when you mention melee, jumping, humanoid designs,...
Just look at the ass "top comment" in here
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56yGc-zVH_E
You have a Battletech fan doing a pretty lengthy if amateur animation to do the setting any kind of justice and the most notable feedback he gets back is to remove everything aside form a 3/4th perspective scene of two mechs slowly walking in opposite directions.
>Youtube comments
I agree people who comment on YT tend to be in a certain special bracket of retardedness but the same kind of reception existed on the forums he had posted it on.
"Anime bullshit", "All that effort wasted on Gundams.", "This is not Battletech at all".

Why are western mecha designs so fucking bad?
99% of them are either Battletech shit, Bayformers shit, or Aaron Beck shit.
At least the ones in >>15223567 and the first Pacific Rim look a bit different from the norm, even if they're not that great.
Only western designer I can think of that usually makes good designs is Ashley Wood.
>>15223592

>>15223575
Stupid people that call themselves Battletech "fans" but have only ever played the Mechwarrior video games think that slow, lumbering gunboats is actually how the Btech universe works.
>>15223592
>99% of them are either Battletech shit, Bayformers shit, or Aaron Beck shit.
It's because they are all California concept bros who see one of the above and rip it off endlessly for their Artstation portfolio. Every fucking thing today is some tacticool knockoff of some Blomkamp movie robot.
>>15223616
>how did they fuck up the toy design so badly?
By changing the shoulder armor design
Putting a huge gap between the torso and shoulders
Giving it gigantic gorilla arms
Making the fingers too square and mechanical
And making the power cables too thick
>>15223560
Well yeah, Battletech does have one of the worst fanbases ever.

Btech universe has more advanced gyroscopes to make full use of those types of legs, it gives more stability on faster speeds
The only mech who went radical in their design and used Horse/Goat legs was the Thug and the Thanatos
The original Stalker Design(the old one) Had "Camel" legs good for the stalker's main purpose

Most Battletech """""fans""""" have never read any of the novels, and think that mechs stomping around with their elbows at 90 degree angles is the height of realism. Mechwarrior is the worst thing to happen to the Battletech franchise. Anytime there's mention of melee weapons like hatchets you have people sperging out over ANIME NOT REALISM. One of my favorite parts of TT Battletech is picking up fallen limbs and using them as clubskind of like in 08th MS Team

MW3 and 4 the same, coding mechs to deal melee damage while in movement would be painful, and the austitic shitstained trolls removing guns and armor to go full melee would screw the MP in all games.
Even the Heavy gear MSG game made for dreamcast had it and it was buggy, nowadays is possible.

>Honestly, I would have just assumed these were all Japanese in origin at first glance.

The notion itself is absurd as all hell but then you have people who start dragging culture into it (Japanese robots are super-special because they love their katanas so fucking much whereaus us westerners clearly see the mechs as nothing more than weapons, it is ingrained in their culture to make magical... yadda, yadda) and you get to the point you wish /b/ could still script-kiddie the fuck out of places like TvTropes which often get quoted as proof of this nonsense.

>>15233528
>Don't know if the design was copied from elsewhere but i love the japanese look to it despite being a western mech. Must be the asian in me
Actually, that mech is a Japanese design.
Backstory:
Mechwarrior is a successful game, Japanese get a port on their own computer system. The definitive version of the game if you ask me, it has music, much better pixel art and all that.
However, since they're making completely new art for everything, the Japanese redesign mechs from the game.
FASA, being desperate for new designs done cheap, takes these designs as well as the designs for the SNES port and unused concept art (these were finished by the FASA artists) Vixen is a part of to complement their own designs in the upcoming rulebook.
Basically, the thing is an unused 90s Japanese redesign of the Valkyrie.

What the fuck is the difference, you drooling retard? Just because a walking tank looks more realistic than a giant samurai doesn't mean it is. They're both ridiculous as fuck. I gotta admit, if there is one thing I love about Battletech art, then it's how they redesigned the licensed stuff to be more original. I just like seeing alternative interpretations.

>>15236753
>How did you find out about this out of curiosity?
I got interested in the non-anime unseens and just what the heck they were. Turns out, the fans were for the most part clueless about their true origin aside from some basic pointers.
Doing some archival digging, cross-referencing with the book they come from, the first Mechwarrior and so on, I ended up with these conclusions.
The only real mystery ATM is who made the cover art for the TRO 3055. For one, the design is definitely one of the unused concepts but the issue is that it credits both a Japanese and a FASA artist. This wouldn't be weird but none of the redrawn concept art designs have the author mentioned (they do have the Japanese company's legal notice) so it's hard to tell whether he helped out with it, made the concept art or what.
>>15237678

It's sad to see what kind of fate those designs had.
They're pretty unique as far as designs go and what little fan art of them exists tends to show great promise if only they took off in Japan.
>>15223240
What is wrong with MWO anyways? Just because the devs missed a couple of their deadlines?
I tried MWLL and it's fun but it's still got that classic mechwarrior awkwardness of control. MWO just controls much, much smoother, and I hope the new Mech Warrior is based on that control set
>>15232197

But 4chan's filter replaces t b h with desu for god knows why, same as they replace f a m with family.
However I disagree with him, I think both western and eastern mech designs are good and I frequently bounce between watching Gundam or Code Geass to playing MechWarrior.
>>15238673
>What is wrong with MWO anyways?
We'd be here until the next year if we had to go through those things in detail.
An absolutely incapable developer running on broken promises is effectively scamming a dedicated niche fan base and making sure there is zero competition.
The simplest way to put it is that you could pick literally any developer on Earth, give them Alex Iglesias to draw mech art for them and the game would either have the same quality and popularity (if it's some no-name mobile showelware devs which is about as good as PGI gets) or be absolutely better overall.
PGI is literally incapable of making a fucking game as is seen by just how utterly they fucked up CryEngine they'd "built" the game on.
There are absolute nobody Chinese developers paid 2 dollars a month who made an MMORPG game in that engine and MW:O doesn't even lick their stolen boots as far as graphics, bugs or polish are concerned. That's how sad and utterly incompetent we're talking.
>>15235684
>>15233683
I really like Shogo but from a mecha perspective it's actually a terrible game, absolutely no difference in gameplay exists between fighting on foot and fighting in a robot save for the useless hovertank feature which doesn't even let you use any weapons. There's no weight to any of the robots' operation. Still, I quite enjoyed it.
>>15238761
What are you talking about? MWO's graphics look good to me, and I honestly haven't run into bugs other than the occasional server issue. And you talk about polish, but MWO honestly has better polish than even MW:LL, which never ceases to feel like a buggy "mod" to me no matter how fun it is. I don't see how they can be considered incompetent if they managed to produce a game that's honestly quite fun and quite playable.
>>15238797
>What are you talking about? MWO's graphics look good to me
You're really out of the loop as far as video games go. Like, 2006 level out of the loop.
>I don't see how they can be considered incompetent if they managed to produce a game that's honestly quite fun and quite playable.
The problem here was the game was fun and playable since the very first beta.
What's more, it was even more fun and playable back then.
What little actual talent was there at PGi left in those early days and since then they've simply been doing the same things over and over for a number of years:
>Removing features.
>Making promises, announcing a package to support the game and then breaking them.
>Lowering the graphical standard of the game.
>Adding more and more layers of broken "balancing".
>Adding Pay 2 Win features to force people into paying more.
>Milking the fanbase dry with new mechs, something that was done to a higher standard and for free back then.
>...
Everyone who knew how to make games left back then and what's left is a bunch of retards picking at the leftover corpse that still has some good innards left.
How like a God He is, that ancient Machine, primal of all His Kind, the Titan! His mighty Fists, massive like two Towers of Destruction, laden with the Doom of Mankind's bitter Foes. He watches over us now as Battle joins, and in his Shadow we shall advance upon our Enemies and defeat them.

That's my first post in the thread, friend. And I figured you'd say something like that, about ripping out the assets to look at them under a microscope in order to be able to say "see, look! And the lighting ingame is fucking kino as shit at night, I have no idea what you're trying to impress upon me.
The funny part is that I haven't played in over a year and have no intention to play it again. I just find it hilarious that you see fit to compare it to low poly DX9 graphics from a decade ago that ran like butter on an 8800.

I have that exact same kit! It's really inexpensive, has decent articulation and it looks pretty good. Paint job's a little eh, but you do feel like you get your money's worth.
>>15240802
-Simple, comprehensible design
-immediately recognizable silhouette
-Lots of large, iconic shapes that make every detail of the design very memorable even after looking at it only briefly
-A lot of the detail and GRITTY REALISMZ comes from the paint job and markings rather than greebling the fuck out of everything
-Everything about the design serves a purpose rather than just being there to overdesign it
-Actually makes a lot of sense for it's purpose unlike the glorified tank turrets or unarmored clusterfucks of most western designs
I would have thought more people on the /m/echa board would understand the principles to making a good mecha design, but I guess you faggots will just eat up almost anything you come across even when it's horribly designed trash.

See, this is where I can't get into "Japanese" mecha (even if that's not designed by a Japanese guy) - I like my mecha realistic (yes, I know, but there's not another good word for it), dirty, and beat up. Why is a humanoid form flying around in space? Why does it have 8 magic swords-wings that glow?
< - Gimme this sort of thing any day
GLORIOUS WESTERN MECHS
>>15241454
>Why is a humanoid form flying around in space?
Because a humanoid form is great for a space vehicle that doesn't operate on slow, extensively planned missions like current spacecraft, using built in thrusters and verniers it can move through space quite quickly, using it's limbs it can turn without wasting fuel the same way astronauts turn, it's arms allow it versatile to manipulate all sorts of objects, and legs give the ability to easily move around in space colonies and other environments with artificial gravity.
Just like the human body is capable of doing many, many different tasks, if I was going to go mine some asteroid or do construction in space, I'd want something like a human but bigger and stronger, one vehicle that can do many different jobs.
Space-planes are actually far less realistic than multi-limbed robotic machines for space work.
>>15241530
>ITT some fuckwit thinks a humanoid robot is somehow more efficient that a simple sphere
volume to mass, bitch.
>>15241563
>ITT someone doesn't know fucking shit about physics and misses the entire point of the post about the value of limbs for a multi purpose zero G work vehicle
Making it a sphere would be fucking pointless, it would even actively make the design worse.
>>15241636
I mean, you can have limbs that fold into the sphere to manipulate things with, but things like >>15241416 are just utterly nonsensical. And that's even WITH zero-g allowing mecha to get around the usual issues of skeletal support and motion.
>>15241680
There's no reason to make it a sphere, it doesn't need a complex mechanism for folding up, and making an entire vehicle a sphere is a pointless effort to design for aesthetics rather than purpose.
Just make it a humanoid, spider tank, or both.
Put thrusters and verniers in it's limbs as well as on the center torso.
The end of each limb can serve as a hand or a foot.
Maybe put tools, weapons, fuel tanks, and extra thrusters in sort of a wing layout that doesn't get in the way of the primarily limbs, while being able to serve as extra limbs for AMBAC, and a flexible mount for the previously mentioned equipment making ithem easier to access and store.
>>15241779
>there's no reason to make it a sphere
Yes there is, the volume to mass is best in a sphere. Arms don't need to be particularly complex to fold up - and if you're worried about mechanical complexity, why do you want a head, more limbs, etc? You're the one designing for aesthetics by making it humanoid. There's no thruster or maneuvering advantage to putting your jets on the end of limbs. The only thing you *might* get a benefit in is changing your center of mass, but you have to sacrifice so much else to get that that you might as well just use the mass you save on not including limbs and all that shit on fuel and move around efficiently.
Go back to your cartoons and waifus, kiddo.
>>15241793
Volume to mass is next to fucking meaningless in space you stupid sack of shit, there's nowhere with more space than space, you don't need to compromise other aspects of the design to make a stupid oversized anal bead transformer, current spacecraft are not spheres and future spacecraft are not going to be fucking spheres.
Making it a sphere decreases limb mobility unless you go full fucking transformer on that shit, making it a vastly more complex and expensive machine.
>no maneuvering advantage to limbs
Flailing them allows the vehicle to rotate on it's center of mass without using up fuel, the same way astronauts do.
Having limbs layed out in a manor that resembles nature makes for a vehicle that can move around under gravity better than a derpy fucking ball with tiny arms on it.
>MUH VOLUME TO MASS!
Barely fucking relevant in space, and your solution is utterly idiotic, if you want it to fold up and have lower volume to mass make it fold blocky, easily engineered limbs into fetal position instead of trying to make a fucking ball.
>G-g back to your cartoons and waifus, KIDDO!
Oh my, you showed me, you called me a kid!
I'm trembling in terror, I can't take all of your edge, daddy!
>gettin' mad about giant robots
Why though
>>15241841
You want you thing to have the lowest mass possible. Spheres allow for the most internal volume per unit of surface area, which means they have the lowest mass.
They also absorb less radiation due to lower surface area, another huge problem in space.
>no spheres IRL
Soyuz's orbital module is a sphere. I could at least give you a cylinder, though. And look how many space station components are cylinders. Or polygonal spheroids...
Making it a sphere in no way decreases limb mobility - that has more to do with the actual structure of the limb itself rather than the body it's attached to.
>flailing limbs
addressed above. Furthermore, this is used by astronauts. Astronauts are not inherently an efficient shape. It's like saying we should make mechs that slither, because snakes slither. It's just a way of doing something, not an inherently superior one.

>>15244052
Not particularly, unless some sort of brain interface technology is developed that has a greater need for direct connection that what we have now. People can already move mouse cursors and other things that don't have anything in common with human limbs just with their minds and an interface, so I would imagine we could do a space-pod without too many issues caused by the dissimilarity.
